El Camino Question

well today after school i got a shot a racing my friends El Camino. He says that it's an 87, and he's got a 305 in it.

My big question is, does his 305 have 4bbl. carbs, or TBI. I know it's not fuel injected like the birds/maros are, but i'm kinda curious about this.

As far as the race goes, we got on the highway, and there were no cars so we tested our runs. He hit the gas before me, and started ahead, but i never lost room, and ran with him until near the end of 3rd gear. By the way, where does 3rd gear shift out at. I'm estimating 100mph or so, i was at 5500 rpms at this point, and then i slowed down and he did too. we got off the highway, and were able to catch a light, and we went from 0-55mph, He ended up winning that too, with my passenger door, at the rear of his drivers door. All in all it was a good race, and fun. Also, i know he's kept this engine in good working condition, while he hasn't modded anything yet, he performs regular maitenence, and his mother (of all people) is a massive gear head, that used to bracket race. If anyone out there has the 1/4 mile times for an 87 El Camino with a 305, it'd be appreciated. Also, what's their fuel delivery system? thanx. looks like i'll have to be modding soon, i want to take him out next time.

It should be your garden-variety, typical 155hp 305 LG4 with a 4 barrel.

'87 trucks did have the TBI fuel injection on the 350 pickups, but I don't believe the 305s received it. Regardless, an El Camino would follow the car road more than the truck road anyway...and in '87 the LG4 was still the universal 305 for the Fbodies, Caprices, Monte's, etc.

TBI 305s were the standard Camaro and truck V8 in '88, and on the Caprices etc in '89.

The day before I sold my car, I raced my cousin's 86 El Camino. He had a brand new 4.3 TBI with a 700R4. We did from a stop to about 80 (this is where I slowed down) four seperate times. Through first gear I pulled on him until I was about two car lengths ahead of him, but in every other gear he was right with me, neither pulling up or falling back. Your friend has a cool car - 87 was the last year for El Caminos.

yeah, it's pretty nice. Yeah, the race wasn't bad at all. I'm thinking that his low end TQ. is what got him ahead of me off the line, thats why at the highend, i was able to hang with him the entire time. Hopefully, if i use a brake stand launch, i might be able to take him. We'll try again once we get some better weather, and i hook up that damn Super Coil.

The Super coil did give me some more over-4000RPM oomph. Don't expect to see anything down low though Aftermarket coils compensate for less voltage at higher RPMs.
