broken gas gauge

This question pertains to a friends not f-body VW pasot, but I figured gas guages were pretty universal so you guys should be able to help me out here. Baically the friend is getting a car cheap from her aunt but the fuel gauge doesn't work. Where would the problem be the guage, wires, sender??? How would I check the components out, how to fix the problem. If anyone can help me out here that would be great. Thanks.

If it doesn't work at all it's probably electrical. Same goes for erratic "jumping". If it works but it's not accurate, then I'd say it's the float in the gas tank.

I've never fixed one, so I could be wrong, but it'll at least get you started.

maybe the swimming part in the gastank is hooked, but check the wires too.
