3.1 convert to 5.7/help needed!!!!
I have a '91 RS 3.1 with 187,000 plus miles. Needless to say the engine is tired.
I'm at the point now that I MUST do something about it. I have a '68 4-bolt 350 with some mods done to it.(I bought it the way it is so I'm not sure whats inside.) It has been dyno'ed @ 412 peak hp@5400 rpm and 345lbs@4700. My question is, is this too much power for my 700 tranny? Will my tranny bolt up? if not,is there a conversion kit available to make it work? What Exhaust mods will be necessary? Cooling? etc.,etc.
I really did'nt want to take this on until I had all the info I could find, but the job has become #1 on the list of "got no choice" .....lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated (if not rewarded.....lol)

I also have a '79 Z28 w/ 427,T400,12 bolt combo!!!!! yay me....lol

Your tranny will not bolt up. Even if it could, it wouldn't last long, assuming it has 187k on it too.
Your best bet for an engine with that kind of power is an aftermarket tranny, such as a B&M 700R4. IMO, don't go cheap and get a TH350...the overdrive 4th gear will be world's better, especially with a gas guzzler like that.
By the way, I assume you have no emissions to pass? Because there's no way in hell you can get a '68 350 to pass an emissions test meant for a '91 MPFI V6.

like Jason said, the Tranny won't mount up. you could get a 700R4 from a bone yard, that was hooked up to a v8 and use it, (have it checked out, and possibly rebuilt first) or you could do a couple other things.
1. get the B&M Tranny
2. Maybe a 4spd. Manual, out of a second or 1st gen.
3. A T56 out of a 4th gen, maro or bird with a 350.
All of these will work out. As far as emmesions, it probably won't pass unless, you have no emmession testing in your area, in that case ,you'd be alright. There will still be some other stuff that'll need to be changed. I believe the radiator will need to be changed, there won't be a computer, so that'll be good, also, the front springs, and motor mounts may need to be changed out. With a motor, producing as much hp as your's i'd also say to change the rear end around, get some good posi, check the bone yards, for one. That's about it, oh, and you might take it to Midas, and see if they can come up with a true dual exaust setup for you. That'd be nice.
oh yeah, that's a killer setup you got. Good luck.

I think 412hp is worth it. And if he's got the time to do it, than go for it. It's his car. But, do know that there will be many hours in the garage working, and swearing about things. But, in the long run, you'd proably be happy with a 412hp beast.
Thanx for all the help guys!!!! I'm thinking its better to save the "Kilr Mouse" for a later date now that I've seen some of your replies. I've also seen some of the benefiets you've gotten out of these V6's....I'm impressed!!!! I never knew that parts were available (mainly b-cuz I never looked into it...my mistake!) I'm starting to feel like a good re-build is probably my best bet at this point. If any of you have any comments or suggestions on this I would be grateful. obviously I'd like to massage as much power out of this engine as possible while maintaining reliability. You have all been great and again I thank you!!!!

i'm not completely sure on performance parts, but i'll give you my .02 on the rebuild. i had the option to do a rebuild earlir this year, but opted for a new motor, i got a 3 year/ 75,000 mile warranty, which is nice. Like me, when you get it rebuilt they'll probably bore it over, so you should expect about 3.2L maybe 3.3 mines about a 2.9L motor now, instead of 2.8L. YOu'd probably want to get a performance cam installed during the rebuild, as well as rollor rockers, and maybe some head porting. Get all the gaskets matched to port size, and possibly port the intake and exaust manifolds, if not get 3.4L headers and install them. That's about all, as far as your 350 goes, get a car that you're not worried about it being emmesions leagal, 3rd gen camaro's are a dime a dozen right now. And drop it in there, try to find one with a worn out 305, or beat 350 in it already, that way you can just ditch the computer, and reuse the tranny. NOt much work will be needed, unlike a v6-v8 swap. All in all, look at some of the guys sigs, for mods. And then do those mods to your 3.1L when you have it rebuilt. Keep us posted on your progress too. good luck.
