Newbie dumb question of the day - carb

Ok,

So the 2.8 has an electronically metered Rochester 2bbl. Can anyone tell me what parts I need to change to get to something more "normal"?

I am assuming:

1. Holley/Edelbrock vacuum advance carb
2. Intake manifold

What else? I'd REALLY like to get rid of the stupid computer control on this vehicle.

Thanks much

Perrone Ford

well, Perrone, i'm not much of an expert or even completely knowledgable about the carbed setup's on the 2.8L's. In the later years,(85-89) the 2.8L carried Multi-Port Fuel Injection, and registered a dramatic increase in hp. The earlier versions made roughly 102hp while the MPFI setup created 135hp, now i'm not sure how difficult it'd be to swap to an FI system, but i do know that 2.8L's litter the junk yards around my area, so finding parts wouldn't be to much of a problem. As far as the carb goes, i believe that Holley makes a 4bbl carb for the 2.8L (maybe a hi-perform. 2bbl though) with a larger manifold, the prob is that the carb and manifold arn't emmesions legal in some areas. hope i helped some.

Thanks,

Your reply was pretty useful, but I really have no desire to go to fuel (fool) injection. Much of the performance gain comes from the fact that the runners are MUCH longer with fuel injection intakes. I want to eliminate as much computer controlled stuff on this vehicle as possible.

So far I have been told to change the distributor, add an ignition box, change the carb and put on a new intake. That should take care of the ignition system and the fuel/air mixture.

As for emisions, I am not subject to testing here in Florida, so no worries there.

Thanks for your post...

Ok here is how to go edelblock has a two pice manifold that will take the holley 390 cfm carb get the vacume secondaries and electronic choke with attention to detail maching pollishing the combination is good for 6500 rpm's all day long with no loss in tork with the stock cam , add cam and 1.6 rollers and lose a little bottom but fly on the top.Good Luck

I just realized you posted this question twice.

As to your other message, a distributor like the one I mentioned will be around $200-$300 new. You might find it cheaper in the junkyards, but I don't know if any GM 2.8's ever had a non-computer-controlled distributor. Call Summit Racing and ask, or look around on the internet.
