Very quick question on 2.8 Carb'd Water Pump vs year 85+ 2.8 MPFI WP, can they swap?

That was my question... if a 1985 or later Water Pump off an MPFI car will work on my 84 Carb'd 2.8. If it will, then i have an avenue to actually pick up a wrench and learn something about how to change out my Water Pump. backstory, not directly related to quick question: (I never said i had a problem doign so.. that $190 Fuel Pump FIASCO was because my apartment people said "If i see that car again and it still drips and smells like gas, im towing it." With that urgency, i had to pay the shop. Now a week later the WP went. Its officially 100% done and needs changed, and i am using myc ar as little as possible, driving it with the cap off if i have to, due to every place i go to being miles away out here. And i avoid doign that if it is at all possible. No i havent popped the Had Gasket, and i dont plan on doing so.)

Of course, if it wont fit, it wont fit. But, i figured someone here would know before i go to the store and spend $30 on a new one, i may be able to save the $30. I can also change the oil and filter as ive done before, and maybe the Timing Belt (?) at the same time.. depends on how patient my mentor" is with me, as i dont know what im doing, and first time on both of these things. Straight up.

Thank you

short answer is if the new water pump is for a car that runs a serpintine belt system no it wont work, even if u change the pully it will spin backwards

only way to change to a later water pump is to change over from the v belt setup to the serpintine setup which will cost alot more then just buying the right water pump

how many miles on the engine?

We are at just under 165,000 Car sat for ?? idk how long, a few months i think maybe a year idk, and that was about ~3000 miles ago, maybe ~2500.

Ive since changed the oil "Twice" got some muck out of it, changed spark plugs and wires id like to change the distributor since i notice the headlights fluxuate in brightness when the car is first started and that tells me perhaps somethign electrical needs changed though it runs fine after that, idk.. also the coolant and the fuel pump, the fuel pump is new. Been puttign some ATF in the gas too, 1 quart last fill up now ~ a quarter of a quart with the new gas, to clean.

Seems "new water pump" from parts store for $30 wins.

I'm not familar with the carbed 2.8s, but my 2.8 had v-belts not serpentine, I would think the WPs would be the same, but why not just order it from summitracing or get one from advanced auto or autozone for the right year and be done with it......I wouldn't drive around with a dead WP at any rate, cracking a HG is the least of your worries, how bout a cracked block, heads or intake manifolds, then you won't be driving anywhere, fix it right asap imo and don't drive it in the meanwhile.
