Is my sterring wheel gonna fall off?

I've got about 2-3 inches of vertical play in it, and now it started making a creaking noise, like maybe it's rubbing against the plastic housing right by the ignition. I know the exact problem, it's because the bracket for the tilt control is loose, but I don't have a wheel puller available to me right now. Is there any way it will actually come off, or did GM design it a little better then that? Thanks ahead guys.

Yes, it will eventually come off in your hands. (have seen it happen)

See the tech articles section about how to tighten it up.

Reno,

Is it really stiff to steer?
My last car, well it became stiff to steer and I thought it was the rack going so I drove it until I could get one out of a local car...well one day I pull into one of the fellows driveways who I drove to work, and the steering let go, it wasn;t the rack at all, it was the nuckle joint under the dash that let go...it would have been a nasty site if it had of let go on the highway...
