Yes, THANK YOU, to all that helped me with my acceleration problem. After I cleaned the inside of the cap, and the plug wire ends, I finally got around to adjusting the timing. (I made the adjustment by ear, I can't beleive in all these years I've never purchased a timing light) I also checked the timing chain as Karl suggested, and the movement between the crank and the rotor were very close. (I think it has a few more miles left in it) The car is running great now. I plan on replacing the ignition parts (cap,rotor,plugs, wires, and coil) with performance parts as my budget allows me to. (I see many trips to Summit Racing Equipment in my future) Again, THANKS, to all that offered help. (next time I'll start with the basics instead of getting freaked by a motor I've never worked on before)

By the way. Can ayone tell me where the timing should be set on an '86 2.8? (just in case I get my hands on a timing light, I can see how close I got it) I have added a Flowmaster cat back system. Would that make a difference in where the timing should be set?

My chilton manual says 10* BTDC, both auto and manual trans. It must be the same for all years.

SO excellent!
BUT, watch out fo too much advance.
Mine?
I set by ear and then back it a slight bit about 1/4" inch, for safety.
I have ever so slight ping, that I need to add colder range plug and get more air into the engine to cure my ping.
How much play, about 1/2" or less, good.
More than 1/2", be concerned, as you are now pushing engine life, by having more fun. It will wear out older worn out parts, quicker.
So cool to hear it worked real well for you.
Setting timing by ear, is just, so bloody easy!
When you check it, it may be higher than 10. Try to keep it about 16 or less. These engines seem to like that. They were set at 10 by the factory for GAS economy performance & emissions passing performance. Setting timing by ear, only adjust the engine to where the engine likes it with the current milage on the block. As an engine wears/ages, sometimes you just have to go that route, to get it where (performance) it used to be, from Day One.

The engineers, that designed these MPFI engines, were not dummies, I can promise you that!

Remember, cams cannot stretch/twist/go outta synch, timing chains can. They are desinged to have a certain life span, under normal usage.
Are we normal usage LOL?!?!?!
Look at your bicycle and see why. There is an adjustment for chain tension/length, isn't there?
And one can buy, replacement motorcycle chains, too, right?
So chains stretch, that's why they are replaced after awhile.
