KARL, get in here.....
karl,i just read your recent posts about a/c compressors.
i'm praying that you are right. since that lovely 94 degree day i've desperately been trying to fix my a/c. well, i learned that the compressor was leaking from THE BACK. around the outer circumference it was oozing out dye.
now, you say it's a seal???? easy fix?? i REALLY don't want to drop $200-$300 on a compressor. thanks

You can ALWAYS MOVE TO THE BEACH!
FROM WHAT I'VE LATELY BEEN READING, TOO, you can have contamination in the system, now, also. Meaning particles from the failed seals or whatever else.
You running R-134 I hope.
Rear of compressor has, I can determine 3 seals.
I'm using my 1985 HELMS book as the guide.
High pressure switch seal.
O-rings suction discharge ports. (where the hose connects to compressor). (2)
Is the system discharged and evacuated?
That will cost $$ to have done.
The High pressure looks like it has a wire connected to it. It has a RED INSULATOR on the end. It's retained by an "C" clip. Then a regular o-ring. (1) It looks like this connector has to be about the 2:00 or 10:00 position.
The others are behind the hose connection onto the compressor.
DOES THAT HELP YA?
If not, I'll meet ya at Bob's (Burbank) tonight and show ya the book for tips.
Again, from what I've been reading lately (car mags Q & A sections on AC compressors) if the system is not flushed and cleared of all stuff (any stuff) if will get back to the compressor and kill it/seize it.
For that, ya gotta go to someone that has those tools and pay.
I have R-12 in one of my vheicles. Still is there. I have to pay about $150-ish to have it put into another car. Includes leak testing, flushing and changing from one car to another.
Even if ya do the 134 conversion, you MUST MUST MUST start with a flushed cleaned out system. Or it will hunt down the weak area and kill it.

hey karl thanks.
well, luckily my automotive group also has Cadillac. since they're GM i decided to head next door and talk to their A/C tech. he said it would cost MORE to replace the compressor seals than to just buy a new one. so....i talked to our parts guy and he's getting me a REMAN for $145. dealer price for a NEW one is $440.
BTW, i'm still running R-12. i like it better but it's a little more $$$. oh, and i can evacuate the system at work for $0. and i'll have to pay $30 to recharge it next time.(i've already charged it twice and i haven't payed one cent
)
damn , i want to get out to burbank but i'm gonna install the compressor tonight....i need to get this done.
