I have a 91 RS 3.1 automatic, I've been reading around on the boards about a smog pump and ac delete. I read on one thread that most autos dont have smog pumps?? is this true? I'm assuming mine does because its the only component on my engine that I dont know what the heck it does. It is located on the lower passenger side of the engine. Anyways, the other day as i was driving it blew up on me. If it is a smog pump I dont want that government regulated crap on my car anyways. So my question is...asside from simply removing the unit what else needs to be done, ie. cap off lines, etc. And also the same for the ac unit. I looked through the threads and all I found was the one for the v8, any help would be great thanks.

Smog pump has nothing to do with type of tranny - so yes, they are on all these cars.
This article assumes a V8 car, but I think the same applies to a V6 car - you can get an A/C delete pulley to remove the A/C, and just change the belt routing to remove the smog pump www.thirdgen.org/serpentine

Ok, I got a shorter belt today and put it on minus the smog pump. (still have not taken the pump out yet, as the belt fits fine with it still in) I was curious as to whether the a/c delete pulley is the same size as the a/c pulley.

Ok, one more question how does the belt route once the a/c is out of the equation? 
Should I go from the tensioner, under the water pump then over the power steering and down to the crank? or from the tensioner to the power steering then back over to the water pump? I am assuming there will not be enough clearance for the latter...

the same way u have it except were it comes up the right side from the ps pump to the ac compressor u would go right from the ps pump to under the tensioner to over the alt pulley
thats how i did it on mine ,and also how its done on 2.8's without ac

Also, do you know what belt length you used. I went to murrays 4 times yesterday to get the right belt, lol.

Went to auto zone today and got the belt that fits with both the a/c and smog pump gone. Works great feels great. Now all I have to do is reduce weight, and get rid of the stupid things.
The belt in the current setup in the picture with the a/c still attached is 92 3/8"

All you guys needed to do was to go to the parts guy and tell them you need a non-A/C, (or) non-AIR belt off of an 89 or earlier... Non-AIR is a 915K6 and without both is an 815K6... 91.5 and 81.5 inches long. Then, have the A/C evacuated and junk it along with the AIR pump and associated crap...

like dragging so much and making such a noise it was bringing down the amperage output of my alt., it almost sounds like the bearing is going out or something? there is a bearing in there right?
and I never use my ac anyways, but if I wanted to hook it back up for emissions or such, just leave it on right and keep the old belt?
Will it hurt Mpg or daily driveability at all?

So on a 89 with the smog pump it has a vaccum line and a sensor hooked to it what if their not hooked up what happens the check engine light a the comp goes to defualt loop?

How does this affect the catalytic converter if that AIR provision is blocked off but the cat is not gutted? I have my smog stuff removed but I installed a brand new non-AIR cat and blocked off the AIR provisions on the manifold and it seems to run 'ok'.. it heats up quicker I think and it doesn't idle quite as smooth as with the gutted cat.. Odd

I'm new at this, but from what I understand the o2 sensor is calibrated for the extra O2 thats being pumped in via the AIR system. with that gone, your emmisions will be seen as richer by the sensor and the computer will try to compensate for that. THis could cause the car to run a bit different. ideally, you want to get a new PROM burnt for your ECM.

I had bought a chip already from tpiparts.net and then tuned the rest of the things I wanted to tune with Moates tuning software. It's easy to use but takes a bit to learn what needs to changed. I knew about the AIR and the O2 milivolts being 100mv lower but the chip I have accommodates for that. What I need to know is will my new catalytic converter survive without AIR, even though I have a proper tune (My BLM's are as close to 128 as they will get @ +- 126 to 130).. I would like to the affects on the actual catalytic converter, not the actual tune as it is already covered. Thanks in advance!

Technically, yes.. Will most people be able to live without burning a new chip? Probably.. But if you want to do it right you need to adjust for the 0.100mv change when removing the smog stuff..

got the 915k6 belt and tried to route it as in the pic and (91.5) inches long and for some reason it's way too long, by a couple inches, maybe I was routing it wrong, but I'm pretty sure I did it right, it was a little dark outside, guess Ill give it a go in the morn...

The way it's shown in the pic above is the factory routing without the AIR pump (except the factory doesn't leave it in place) for A/C cars, and I've posted other pics without both A/C and smog.

Yeah I did open it a wide as it could go I even tried to get a little pry bar in there and still nothing I have it routed the same way as in the picture

Im going to the store tommrow to finally pick up a belt and get rid of the Air pulley. Now the parts cat. says 825k6 is for a 2.8L no AIR and no A/C It is 82.5 inches long.
Is that the correct belt because you have 815K6(81.5" long) listed on this thread. Just wana make sure before I go buy the belt tommorow. Thanks.

Sorry mav. The info on that autoparts store was indeed wrong. I got a 825K6 like you said, this morning and it works great. More room where I needed it with the AIR gone.

Ok quick question, how do you route the belt if you HAVE to keep the AC? Pics would be nice.
Years ago I found out my body's internal temp control thing in my body is defective, ( most likely genetic) but when I get in 70+° weather, my body temp shoots up to 102° and I start sweating worse than a hooker in church. That's why I need to keep the AC.

Hey guys, I have an 88 5.7 GTA, keeping the AC but want to put the delete pulley in place of the smog/AIR pump. What do I do with the line coming from the pump? Can I leave everything else in place - for now - and just yank the pump out? I'm not interested in just bypassing it - I want to remove it.

Does nayone know where I can get an A/C delete pully for my 92 3.1-my compessor is bad and I need a new belt. I'm going to keep the smog pump on for now, atleast till the car is too old for Ohio E-check.

I doubt that GM would use a different bracket for the P/S pump on a non-A/C car. The belt routing diagram shows that the belt just doesn't go up over the A/C pulley. Let me see if I can find the diagram.

Hey everyone, just wanted to say that I used this thread to do my smog pump delete and my delete was completely successful. The belt routing shown in the picture above by johnny camaro IS the correct belt routing. The belt you MUST use for this if you still have A/C is part number 915k6. I got the belt from advance auto parts.
After installing the belt, there are 2 more things you must do-
1- plug the vacumm line going from the smog pump to the intake
2- plug the line going from the smog pump to the exhaust manifold
After that youre done! and I even noticed a slight increase in throttle response. Hopefully this helps some people who arent sure what needs to be done. This was performed on my 1992 camaro RS 3.1L auto

There is one other note:
When deleting the A/C, the mounting of the power steering pump needs to be changed. Remove the A/C compressor and all brackets (AFTER having the system discharged), and then remove the bolts from the front power steering pump bracket and the nuts and bolt from the rear bracket. Remove the rear bracket and put the pump back into place without it. Put the small bolt into the water pump hole and then rotate the PS pump bracket around until the upper large mounting hole at the top of the pump bracket ON THE RIGHT SIDE (A/C installation uses the hole on the left and DO NOT USE THE THREADED HOLE which is where the lower bolt for the A/C compressor bracket goes into) aligns with the bolt hole in the cylinder head. Put the bolt taken out of the original hole in here, put the belt on, and call it a day. The belt routing may look wrong due to the VERY limited clearance between the tensioner-to-PS pump and the wrapping over the water pump pulley, but it's the way GM did it at the factory (I have seen a factory 3.1 non-A/C car with this routing).
If you wish, you MAY be able to find a rear PS pump bracket for a non-A/C car, but it's going to be difficult... Or you can find a way to modify the stock rear bracket.
:edit: And you DO NOT have to do anything with the ECM when deleting the AIR pump. Our V6 engines LOVE running rich under acceleration and you won't throw any codes UNLESS you have an issue elsewhere.

If you wish, you MAY be able to find a rear PS pump bracket for a non-A/C car, but it's going to be difficult... Or you can find a way to modify the stock rear bracket.
:edit: And you DO NOT have to do anything with the ECM when deleting the AIR pump. Our V6 engines LOVE running rich under acceleration and you won't throw any codes UNLESS you have an issue elsewhere.

Well said Maverick. Lots of good info. This should be the end all thread for anyone trying to delete their smog/air pump on a 3.1 liter. You are very correct, I didn't have to do a single thing with my ECM and no codes are popping up either. I didn't even remove the pump, its still in there (because I was being lazy lol)

im looking to keep my a/c but eliminate my smog pump. Everything is disconnected, just only have the pump only mounted.... Ideas? 3.1L V6 manual trans.

Ive got some questions for people with v6. I bought my 89 rs and it wasnt all there. The ac was gone so I got a belt to route around it. My questions are this.
1. Where the intake is, one hose goes to the brake booster and the other goes where ?
2. Smog pump, its currently hooked up with the belt but there is a small black fitting for a vacuum hose on the unit. What plugs there and where do it plug to?
3. There is a small black cylinder like sensor. It has 3 fittings for vacuum hoses. Ome goes to the egr one goes to the tb or charcoal canister(not sure) and the other isnt plugged up. Just the fitting for the vacuum hose. What goes here?? Please help.
