3.4 3400 Questions

I'm very excited I just got a 3.4 for a very good deal, and am looking at getting a 3400 to make a hybrid. I've been reading all the posts on how to do this, I happened to stumble across the page linked in the sticky about the 3.1/3100 Basic install guide. I was wondering if this guide will basically be the same as what I am doing.

I was also wondering if anyone had any suggestions on cams. Also should I use the crank and pistons from the 3400? I plan on turbo charging it eventually, but for now I just want a solid platform.

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

Yes, use the 3400 pistons.
The crank is the same between the 3.4 an 3400, so which ever one is in better shape is the one to use.

The easiest ECM to use is the 1227730 with a MEMCAL from a V6 Cavalier between the years of '87 and '94. There was a change in 1990 to the type of EGR.

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

Thanks for the info. Also I was wondering, while ill building this engine, I'd kinda like to throw the 3.4 intake and throttle body on my 3.1, does this require alot? and I will not be using the egr, does this matter?

That's not terrible! Your engine is meant for a clutch pedal! That's wonderful!

The guys on THIS forum will have you running your current ECM and learning to tune and burn chips. I can't wait to see how well you get along!

Good luck!

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

I stand corrected on the ECM; however I knew they would have you using a stock GM piece.

Hey, I was close!

Keep on running...

Ok, I found a 99 chevy venture with a 3400, just wanted to check and see if this platform will work alright.

Yes, the top end and other parts from the '99 Venture will work fine.

It's too bad you're so far away, I have a bunch of 3400 and possibly 3500 parts I'd part with.

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

Yeah that's too bad, speaking of 3500, how much is the advantage of a 3500 intake over the 3400?

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

There can be advantages to using the 3500 intake. The larger plenum can improve throttle response, the larger runners are good for increased flow, but not everyone has reported improvements when replacing their 3400 intakes, while some have.

Re: 3.4 3400 Questions

Someone whos done the hbyrid swap and I know at least 1 person recently has, should really do a writeup on it that we can have made a sticky, would do it myself, but its going to be quite some time before I can attempt the swap for many complicated reasons, I can't even take an accurate guess at when I will do the swap.

Yes, a write up would be nice. I am looking at purchasing a 1999 Grand am for the 3400. My plans are to park the Camaro and drive the Grand Am while I collect parts. Will keep you all posted...

"Mains" are what hold the crank in BTW.

As I recall some of the intakes are somewhat better than others. You might what to check at 60degree-v6 to see the difference.
