(E)xhaust (G)as (R)ecirculation. It pumps spent exhaust gases back into the intake. It suposedly reduces emissions.

Will set a code if not working. Will cause other problems with ignition if not used. The EGR gases help with fuel milage too so you will see a drop in fuel milage and performance at high speed driving like on a freeway because thats when the EGR gets most used.

You will have to disable the EGR in the eprom and adjust all the spark advance at part throttle downward. The EGR also allows you to run more spark advance due to the dilution effect. Without an operating EGR, you will have big time spark retard occurring if you don't adjust the spark advance tables.

IF ya wanna do it right, go get a set of "bad" V-8 headers from the F-3 (3rd gen) series & install that EGR set up.
It really is to your advantage to install everything working correctly, whether you are concerned with smog inspections or not.
When it's all hooked up right, no down side to performance at all. Or, the car actually runs better & gets better milage.

Ked is right. The EGR is disabled when you go into WOT, so it costs NOTHING for performance. And you have everything to gain when you are NOT in WOT (which is 99% of the time).
