hyper tech chip.

I just ordered a stage 2 hyper tech chip, and I wanted to know how well it works, and how hard is it to install?

I have had a Hypertech, Fastchip and Stock Chip. All Hypertech did was remove the governor. I noticed nothing else.. I was disappointed and felt it was a waste. I then tried fastchip and was shocked to see that a chip could really work.

This does not make sense as all you need to do is set a "switch" in the eprom to make it work for a Manual. The code for the Manual is simpler than an Automatic as the auto has to concern itself with locking the TCC. A manual only has to control the shift light.

An optimized manual can use a little more spark advance @ WOT (actually PE) when you first boot it and a bit of a pump shot, but everything else is the same. I have already converted a BIN that was intended for an automatic to a manual (the ARAP BIN) and it worked just fine in my buddy's 89 1LE 305 5-speed....so there is no great "change" needed to make an automatic BIN work on a manual.

To my knowledge, the 3.1 uses the same basic definition as the SD TPI ($8D) and it should not be that difficult to modify. The "definition" file is what is needed to modify the settings with the TunerCat BIN Editior. I wish I had a local 3.1 to play with to confirm. If it was that easy, then all you would have to do is buy the automatic version and then "switch" the transmission setting.

Maybe there is something weird with the F-body 3.1. I was just looking at the "ECM/EPROM" cross-referencing tables and noticed that the 3.1 V6 used in the F-body DOES NOT use the same ECM as most of the other 3.1 V6s (which is the SAME as the SD TPI).

Most 3.1 V6s (except W bodies) use the 7730 ecm (the same as the SD TPI...which uses the $8D definition). The W-body version uses the 7727 which is the same ecm as used in the Vette and still uses the $8D definition. The F-body uses the 404 which I cannot see if anyone else uses and there is no information on the definition type. So the problem (for lack of good custom BINs) may be the uniqueness of the 404 ecm used.

If anyone with a 3.1 F-body is ever in the Kamloops area, give me a shout. I would like to read the BIN and see if I can shed some light on what can be done with the eproms for the 3.1 V6s in F-bodies. In spite of the different ecm, the 3.1 F-body BIN may STILL use the $8D definition...GM does not like to re-invent the wheel.

I will stand on my comment about the "switch" for transmissions, as it is the same method used in every other GM eprom that I have seen. I can tell you where it is on the $8D. I just need to know what is used on the 3.1 F-body version.
