4L60 Transmission
Ok I have a 1992 Camaro with the 4L60 transmission, is it the same transmission used behind the 3.4 L engine, I notice the have it as "4L60 - E" is that the same thing or is it diffenerent.
Ryan, You win a lottery or something?
You keep the 4L60.
Make sure it's strong.
You "cannot" use the "E" tranny.
It's electric and you need to rewire the car for it.
4L60 is the stronger of the 700R4, except for the "E" tranny.
Electric O/D set up, unlike the one you/I have.

The 4L60 is the same transmission as the 700R4. It was strictly a name change by GM. There are some internal differences over the years and the one use the later years is a little stronger than the earlier years.
The E version, as mentioned above, has the shifting controlled electrically as opposed to manually through valving. ALL control the Torque Convertor electrically, but the shifting is completely different.
If you get an "SRTA" (reman) from GM, it is basically the "guts" from a 4L60E placed in the 4L60/700R4 case. It is the strongest version available from GM for our cars. To get something stronger, you need a "rebuild" from a tranny shop that is specifically built stronger, like Pro-Built.

Hey great, someday when my 3.1 dies I'm going to do the 3.4 swap and I'll have a good auto trans behind it, One more question, on the over drive, is the 4L60 WITH NO E have electric 4 speed or is that valved controled to.
It's the same set up as you now have.
I also just won the lottery.
I was just given a 1969 Firebird.
With title!
I'm stripping it for parts for my Wife's and my cars and it goes to someone else.

Remember: The 4L60 IS a 700r4. If the names are confusing, then just forget that you have a 4L60. Call it a 700r4, and that will answer all your questions!
Er, well, unless you need to ask that of a 700r4!
The only thing electrically controlled on a 700r4 is the TCC (stands for Torque Convertor Clutch) solenoid. When the 700r4 was placed in cars without computers, the TCC was engaged solely through pressure switches. When the 700r4 was given to computer controlled cars (like our 82-92 f-bodies), the computer decided (based on a pressure switch, and in later models, a trans fluid temp switch) when to engage the TCC.
That's why the TV cable setting (for line pressure) is so important to a 700r4. It's setting affects everything!
