WHY?????

They HAVE 2001 CAMARO SS for Pursuits!

152 MPH top speed.

"Barney, Will you stop taking the long way back to Mayberry!!, in a hurry!!"

As stated by the Georgia State Policeman (enjoying his seat in the new 2001 Camaro!) on the evening news-
"This vehicle is to let them know, I'm not going away!"

This news story is the BEST news GM and the to be soon dead Camaro (2002, it goes bye for a bit) have had, since the California Highway Patrol had the "new" 1981 Camaro pursuit cars.

I recall, as soon as the CHP got the newer (back in the 80's) Mustangs, they were blowing up the engines!
Fix Or Repair Daily!

Tech topic--
Can your V-6 F-3 take on the Georgia Highway patrol
and
win?
Mine?
Maybe in gas milage!

As I was discussing freeway chases with a California Highway Patrol person (at a car show, in Burbank), "when are people gonna learn, you cannot out run a radio?"

BUT....
You can outsmart them at nightime!
I've done that a couple of times.

BUT, Trucking to the tune of 152 MPH?
I think the gas milage would be a little shy of the stated EPA rating!

I recall when only Ferraris could do about 150MPH.

A Chevy Camaro?
LOVE IT!!
Wonder if the Firebirds are that fast?

My 1974, so far, tops out at 124 MPH. I haven't high speed driven it for so long, it needs a bit of a tune up for those 124 MPH burst right now.

Those Mustangs that you are talking about had the FORD 302 (5.0L)in them and the reason the stupid cops where blowing them up was they all had manuals behind them, only way they ordered them, the cops where missing shifts when chasing the bad guys so thats what scrambled them, I LOVE THOSE CAMAROS, nothing like them REMEMBER THE CAMARO makes a better COP CARs any day of the week, whip the sh*t out of anything on the road.

The California Highway Patrol also has a Volvo 740 coupe. Black and white, damn ugly if you ask me.

Come up to Oregon, We have "forest Green" fourth gens and still have a few white third gens. The Medford fuzz even have a 68 or so stingray, not the DARE car but a regular patrol.....crusier?... Naw.... vechicle.

I grewup in corvallis, (about 80 miles south of portland) The local police had a "intercepter" as they called it. It was a jet black corvette that they would also bring around to the schools to show. Never understood the anti drug dealing with the car. Anyways it was in afew hot pursuits - they never got away from it, that i do remember reading about. I also remember seeing afew 5.0 mustangs that sounded mean.

Also, the mustangs were notorious for creating upforce at high speeds, they wouldnt stay tight to the road. which caused serious handling problems at high speeds. Course, we all know mustangs have never been able to handle worth a hoot.

Why is this the best news for GM and the Camaro? SC has been buying Camaros, the new ones, for years. Im confused on this point.

Speaking of which, do any of you remember a COPS style TV show that had the NCHP chasing someone and not being able to catch them? Do you remember what they did? They called up good ole SCHP and the next thing you see is a Silverstreak as SCHP and GM Camaro come to save the day by catching the varmit. YEHAAA!

You'd a thunk they'd have gotten Camaros on order that same day, but guess its better late than never.

I ran along side that kid in the Sushi thing, in my Vette. I tried to get him to play.
BUT, he had real cop exempt "Plates" (Meaning-I would have gotten stung). I then watched him go way fast up the PCH to Ventura. I was trailing. I was kinda hoping the CHP would have seen him & pulled him over. He was a real a$$hole kid.

The idea behind the news story I saw on the ABC evening NATIONAL news was about the dangers of pursuits.
How Maryland has banned any more high speed pursuits. Has been that state policy for the past 10+ years they said.
Then, they show the SC cops in the NEW 2001 Camaros. The Camaros looked great, during the "track testing" time.

For the locals in SoCal.
Recall couple of years ago (maybe 1-2 when the Channel 9 evening cop car chase against a Cab/truck, got the highest evening ratings?
I recall hearing them go very close by my house. I watched them chase the guy (with no back tires, just steel rims-a dualie axle) on Venice Boardwalk. I was on the floor cheering the guy on! One of the most fun chases I ever watched!!
My second favorite was the guy that stole the 7-Up Delivery tractor trailer.
He went past where I was working in Sherman Oaks (Ventura Freeway), on the shoulder side, NEVER HITTING A CAR, going round turns, leaving cases of 7-Up on the street. Hysterical FUN!
Finally stops, jumps out and gets caught up a tree!
He shows up in court with his his cut out to say 7-Up!
IF I was an owner of a truck driving company, I would have hired him on the spot!
I never saw any better driving since Smokey and The Bandit!!

I forgot the third one.

The guy in Downtown LA, got the cops to join him, doing doughnuts in the middle of the slum section of streets, during that car chase.

Does LA have the best car chases or what!!

I just found the "article" & Video.
If you have Netscape, perhaps you can get to it.
I could not figure out away to link to it.
It's in the ABC-TV Evening news section, I went to national news and found the article about Cops & Camaros.
Shows the news story I saw last night.

Baltimore banned the high speed chases.

Wish they had that policy when I was driving thru Maryland alot back in the 70's.
Maryland Staties were criminals back then.
Made more money than parking ticket criminals in LA!

Actually CHP is trying many new cars.... if you go to the CHP training grounds near the 405/5 split ull see them with a few lightnings, there was a cobra, and also some vettes (we have some CHP in the family as thats how we got in) their looking for something fast as HELL off the line to stop pursuits before they even begin..

Out in the beaches of LA, the cops use TOYOTA Land Cruiser or 4-Runners things. In Santa Monica, they use Dodge Ram Pick Ups.
The new Cop Bikes are nice, tho. Look like BMW bikes.
ON the Beach, the Santa Monica cops also use Honda ATC's with "light bars". Those make me laugh.
It's the bicycle cops I don't like.
What was that "Cop Beach Show" they used to make on the USA Channel? Saw them film that alot in Venice.
Happy July 5th.
The Lightening Show (in the sky) on July 3rd, was way better than any fireworks show.
