I just got back from a vacation, my car sat for 18 days. Now while in idle, it sounds like it is working extra hard, but when I step on the gas, I can't tell. It sounds like a loud vooooom noise at idle,it sounds a little like when the air conditioning is on. Does anyone have any idea how to check for a bad cat?

Run the car at about 2500 rpm for 3 minutes in neutral or park, then check the cat. If its glowing red, it shot. Also if it clanks or rattles when you bang on it, its shot.

 

I know this sound this has happened to me before. It can be one on two things. It could be that your air tube is off thats why you have a loud noise at idle. Or the other thing it could be is that you have hole in your cat. run the tests that Drew sugested if you run the car and the cat is red that means you have a big block in your cat and it needs to be replaced.
