Grant GT Wheels

I was in the parts store the other day and i saw a Grant wheel #773 on sale and i thought my that will look good on my firebird. So i picked-up the wheel and the grips felt pretty good, but i don't i know it might make the car look good but will the feel of the handling of the car be different since the Grant wheel is 13" Dia. and my stock 83 wheel is 14" Dia. What do you guys think, or do any of you have one already??

I have a Grant wheel and i love it. I'm not sure what size it is but it's smaller than stock but not too small. It's the perfect size for whipping the steering wheel around.

Sorry, i bought my car with it already on. It seems like something that should be easy but i don't think it is. Try asking in General Tech cause i'm positive somebody has installed one there.

Whenever I got mine I also purchased the installation kit. As long as your car doesn't have an air bag it is just a matter of using a steering wheel puller a pair of pliers to remove the clip and a ratchet & scoket to remove the nut.

Yeah, if it's pre 1990 it shouldn't be too hard. Mine had an airbag and i assume that removing it would throw a code or something....then you'd have to fix that.

That sound easy enough. I got an 1983 firebird. But will it afect steering at all?

hey,
my cars been rained in a couple of times now, and the leather wrapped steering wheel is falling apart. and of course GM doesn't have anymore in stock, so i was thinking of a grant, because most of the boneyard ones will be worse than mine. But my question i will my firebird horn button work in the grant wheel? cause i like the screaming chicken in the middle.

you know what that's what i've been trying to find out myself. Grant make a Pontiac Emblem for the wheels, but not a bird. What year is your car? I have an 83 and the center bird on my car is alomst like a sticker or something i think i can remove it but then again i haven't taken the wheel apart yet. They do make a black horn button so you can put a decal or stick of what ever you want on the center.

So if I have the steering wheel with the airbag I can't change to a grant wheel real easily? And you can use your horn?

The only problem with installing a grant wheel in place of a wheel with an airbag is you will have no airbag. but you can get away with it if you don't want an airbag. also the computer will throw a code, but you can get around that by pulling the fuse that controls the airbag.

OK well I got a grant about 2 months ago, and I love it. I had an airbag, removed the bag after taking many, many precautions so it not go off. It's not hard with the airbag either, just remove the fuse, the battery cable, the yellow wire at the base of the steering column and the column switch behind the wheel(a black disk type thing) You just have to deal with the red light being on all the time.
The diameter is 13 inches so the steering response is a little faster too...

Also remember if you change to a non-airbag wheel in an airbag equipped car to keep the original wheel. It's illegal to sell an originally airbag-equipped car without an airbag.

my 1985 wheel doesn't have a sticker on it, the horn button is rubber, and the bird is embosd into it. IT looks really nice, and i'd like to keep the bird.so i'll keep searching bone yards.

A smaller diameter wheel will make your car feel like it has a quicker steering response.
The idea works rather well.
Think of a race car, ever see a "stock size wheel"?
Only NASCAR has the "stock" size wheel. They have to slow down steering response for going 200MPH.
I put one of those wheel on my S-10 Blazer.
Blazers have slower steering than the F-3 (it is a truck, after all). That change made a world of difference.
I am going to be getting a Grant Wheel for my Wife's 1968 Camaro, the Classic Wood style one.
I have to change her turn signal switch, off comes the wheel!
BE REAL CAREFUL REMOVING A STEERING WHEEL, FIRST TIME!
You can break your nose, real easy!

The 1985 one on my Firebird is exactly like described, "Leather" (is it really leather?), with embossed rubber horn button of the famous screaming chicken. Mine, for a CA car is in exceptional shape.
No, that screaming chicken horn button will not work with the Grant set up.

This is Grants Web Site they have a Pontiac emblem but no Firebird. Maybe send them an e-mail requesting one..who knows, if they get enough requests they may start making it.

Maybe you could try taking a plain horn button to a Trophy shop or any other place that does engraving and have it engraved onto the button.
My local trophy shop has the equipment to download images from the net and engrave them to the item.

I got a question. I was installed my wheel yesterday it seems now that the car is really out of alinement, is that because i went from a 14.5 inch wheel to a 3 inch wheel. I know I installed the wheel right, I followed the directions to the Tee. The whell only when on one way, maybe the is way out of line and I didn't notice it until i got the new wheel.

CC_Hotrod, that's a btchin' idea! That's one of the things that kept me from getting a wheel- losing the Firebird horn button.

Reason why I said you can break your nose.
You are dead in front of the steering wheel as you are cranking it off the column.
All the sudden it pops at you.
And your nose is right there.

I'll give ya a guys email address at Grant to make your request.
I'm getting a wheel from him for my Wife's 1968 Camaro.
This guy Robert will be HAPPY TO ASSIT YA IN YOUR CHOICES AND QUESTIONS.

Let me ask him & I'll send him this thread, too.
Be patient.

This evening, I sent him this thread.
I told him about everyone here and let's see if Grant Products can give us an answer.
We'll have to wait until Monday or Tuesday (when he gets this at work!).
Maybe we CAN get that special emblem!
