I use the cheapest oil (anything on sale), AC oil filters and change it every three thousand miles.
I recently undid the top end of my (owned since 1989 & 70K miles) 1985 S-10 Blazer.
It was spotless in the oil valley. Spotless in the cylinder walls.
Spotless in the heads.
My headgasket went.
The engine has 211,500 miles on it.
IT still runs. Now, I need to change oil pupms. My pump got killed sitting in the chocolate milk (oil/water mixture) for the 2 months I let it sit.
I try to spend under $6 per oil change, including oil & filter. Sometimes I must spend $9 per oil change.
I know my idea works. I saw my evidence.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the K&N filter; as long as you change your oil every 3000 miles or so, a GM filter (or Purolator, Fram's aren't built so well) is fine.
Here's a great read on the internal build of various oil filters: http://members.nbci.com/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html I was using a Fram filter until I read this site; now I stick with AC or Purolator.
[edit] Make sure you read his "FAQ" section, and hunt down his "opinion" page. A certain company threatened him with legal action unless he separated his opinions from his statistical findings.
