Im new here and i just ought my first Camaro!, need help

hello everyone, i have been looking all over the net for a V6 camaro forum and i finally found one!

I just bought my first car, a 1987 V6 automatic MPI Camaro Sports Coupe and its in perfect condition, engine is wonderful, int. is red and looks brand new, ext. is white and has 0 body dents and good paint job. it needs rims and ground effects but thats not what im worried about, my friend has a 1989 V8 Camaro RS and is a fanatic, he said that my car looks perfect but it has no ***** "pardon the term". this upsets me because and i want to know if this is true, i know that it is nothing compared to a V8 305 or 350 engine, but is my car slow? i a planning on getting a flowmaster exaust and K&N filters for it and i have a few questions for you guys.

1.Do multi port fuel injectors require 1 or 2 air filters & are they good?

2.Is there any way i can get more air into my engine "ram air"?

3.Around how much would it cost to buy ground effects from a RS at a junk yard???

4.whats is a good item to cover up chiped paint?

5. what else can i do to beef up my camaro

i would appreciate it if you could help me out, i will be coming here very often now, i have alreay found a grip of info here, thanks.

your new car sounds very cool. dont listen to your friend! v6 camaros arent speed demons but they are pretty fast!! If your car is fuel injected it needs two air filters. they are located under the air filter box located in the front of the car that hooks up to the plentum.the box is over the radiator. undo the fasteners and lift up the box. they will be there.to get more air into the car drill holes in the bottom of the holders where the air filters sit. If you do enough mods to it you can make it run with your friends car! Just remember that v6 camaro's kick A$$

87 Camaro ,
Hey man , Welcome to the board , Im new to .I would not worry about what your friend said about your camaro ,Sounds like a fine car to me .I know there is plenty of people who would love to get their hands on a V6 ,and arent even thinking about V8s. I have heard of beefed up 2.8s hanging with 305s on the track .I dont know what kinda airfilter box you have .I have a 88 2.8 v6 with dual boxes on the front , I took the water shields out and sawed out part of the bottems of my boxes ,and droppped in some k&n filters and removed my air silencer. This mod on my car brought the car to life .As far as ground effects ,In my opinion ( could be wrong) , that would prabably be hard to find in a junkyard being the car is prabably wrecked , but still look some .If you want them bad enough , I know there is a site on here , I'll find the link and send it to you , that sells parts like that .Goodluck man , Keep us informed , Wayne (WaynesRS)

well i got this car for a steal, it only cost me 2,200 bucks and the only reason the owner is selling the car to me is because he got a job promotion and is moving to another state by the end of the month, if he wasn't he wouldn't sell the car period, he origionally wanted 2,500 for it, but i hagled and got it for 2,200 all it need's is supporters to hold up the hood and hatch back wich isn't hard to get hold of.

87 camaro

I dont know much about the 3.1 swap . I have heard that a 3.1 camaro is not much faster than a 2.8 .My dad owns a 96 grandprix with a 3.1 in it .My 2.8 feels like it has the same pickup and power has his does , but I know our hp is not the same . Wayne

your welcome ...I had a flowmaster on mine . I hated it , It was to loud .Everyone told me to put a dynamax . I love it , It kinda sounds like a flowmaster , but its much much quieter ,its got a nice rumble to it ,Also with the flowmaster they clamied an increase in hp , I did not notice it but with the dynamax I noticed an increase in power. If I were you id stay away from a flowmaster ,Wayne

the flowmaster 40 series cost $72.95 in summit. another idea is the traditional thrush cherry bomb. I had one on my old v6 camaro and it sounded ok.

www.geocities.com/overlift

Now I recommend a Dynomax cat back and Catco high flow converter, then I would get power pulleys anda fastchip from fastchip.com... After that doing that I would look into the Crane 2030 Cam and 1.52 Roller lifters, after that I would look into some 3.73 or (4.10) rear end and a locker, after that I would get a double roller timming chain and spray NOS...

wow thanks for all the info guys, i always thought that an exaust system would cost me at the least $250 bucks. WayneRS, now when you said 130 for the dynomax did you mean the muffler & tailpipes & instalation??? or just the muffler & installation, because i need to replace my muffler and tailpipes because htye are rusted and have so many holes it looks like swiss cheese. I may as well get a performance cat converter for 60 bucks more so i guess it will be around 250

in about 3 weeks i am going to the junk yard to look for ground effects & some RS, Z28 or IROC rims for my car, my car WILL be sitting on some RS, Z28 or IROC rims if it's the last thing i do

Alright. I didn't really bother to take the time to read all the item aforementioned, so I'm going to start my answer off fresh.

Yes, you have 2 air filters, and yes you can set up a Ram air type setup. FastRS has tried both CAI and Ram Air, and he said he felt more with the CAI if I'm not mistaken.

The V6 F-body's in their MPFI forms (no offense Carb guys) are pretty stout. Back in their day, they could hold their own, however, compared to many of today's more efficient engines, it's a no contest, BUT if you stick around long enough, and listen, we'll make sure that you can at least put some Uncle Ben's on the dinner table.

First off, what you need to do to your car is a full tuneup. TOMP has an old post somewhere of this. I've been meaning to ask him to repost it being that it is almost Fall. I know that he does his in the Spring, but some of us do it at other times. TOMP, hope your listening. BTW, on the tuneup, make your choice of Cap/Rotor, but I strongly suggest either Accel 8.8's or CraneCam's Firewire 8.5 (which I happen to have a spare set of I may be willing to sell....email me though).

After you get a tuneup, then you'll want to go with DYNOMAX catback (149.99 or along that price range at Summit). Flowmaster's on our cars sound nice.....at idle. Anything above 3 grand and you'll start trying to figure out just where they slapped the Honda emblem on your car.

Next, there's the chip. I have a Jet Stage 2, and until I cleared my computer, I felt no difference. Afterwards though, wow. I do know now though that there are better chips out there. Fastchip.

After that, you could start looking at gears. How many miles did you say were on your car? You could possibly wake up your engine with a fresh timing chain. Also an ignition box would increase your spark. I'm fresh out of ideas for now, but we'll be sure to answer all your ?'s if you have any more.

first of all thanks for the info, this is one of the nicest forums i have ever been to, i haven't even seen any zealots yet

well ovrclck350, i have approx. 113,000 miles on the car. it has a brand new alternator on it.

what stuff would i need for a complete tune up???

just so everyone knows i am getting the car tomorrow and i will know a great deal more about it once my camaro addict get's under the hood and fiddles with everyhting, but from the looks of it, the car is in GREAT condition.

i am so in love with this car, i was an imports man myself "wanted a honda so bad" but when i layed eyes on my friends 89 RS and his 86 IROC V8 TPI
i was hooked, one thing i am ashamed to say is i hardly know squat about cars or camaro's, but with allt he help form these forums and my friend i know ill get the hang and meaning of everything in no time

87_Camaro, welcome to the site! Overclk350's got the best "plan" for your new toy... start with the basics (tuneup, exhaust, intake), and then move up to the harder stuff. Plus, too, you'll feel the biggest improvement from the tuneup/exhaust/intake- and with that as a basis, any other future mod you do will work even better. Example- you don't want to increase your fuel pressure until you've increased the air flow of the motor- that's air flow "in" and air flow "out".

I'll make a new "Major Tuneup" post for all to see... it's been a while, eh? The Major Tuneup will cost you less than a garage would charge- and you'll replace more. My friend used to get charged way past $100 for plugs, wires, air filter, and fuel filter! That's more like a minor tuneup... I did a major tuneup for him back in '97, and found out he had the original worn-to-hell distributor cap still on the car! The main cost of the major tuneup will be in your choice of aftermarket spark plug wires and K&N air filters. Those 8.5mm Crane wires of Overclk's would be a good start, and you could always buy stock air filters "for now" from K-mart, and add the more expensive K&N filters later.

Oh- here's the ram-air mod for your car. Never mind that it talks about the TPI v8's; your MPFI v6 shares the same intake. https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/ramair.shtml

Chipped paint; well, if you're careful, you can use a bottle of touch-up paint and a toothpick. First, stir the paint with a toothpick. Next, use another toothpick to put small, SMALL dabs of paint in the chip. Don't use the brush inside the cap of the paint bottle! Cover the inside of the chip completely with your small dabs, and let it dry. After it's dry (an hour or so), lay down some more dabs, wait for them to dry, etc- this will help "build up" the chip. The brush inside the cap will leave streak marks, using a toothpick will give you a smoother appearance. As you get near to filling the chip, you could use larger blobs of touch up paint. Just always remember to stir the paint up with one toothpick before applying the paint with another.

[edit] I just posted the Major Tuneup info under another message title; check it out!

oh i forgot to mention that my camaro has a full bra on it, i like the way it looks but under the bra the paint has a yellow look to it as if it stained thta color, is there any way i can get the white color back if i decide to remove the bra, or is it permanent????

my friend said bra's do more damage to the car than the sun, is this true?

You might be able to bring the paint back with a polishing compound... maybe your clearcoat just got yellow'd from dirt being trapped between the bra & bumper. If anything, it couldn't hurt. You could polish a small section on the side to see what's up. I think Meguiar's is the company that sells yellow bottles with #'s on 'em... they're polishes, the higher the #, the finer the polish. So if you got a low # and kept working up to the high #'s, it might help...

Plus I always thought bras were for protection against rocks, not sun... but yeah, sun won't nuke paint; as you can see the rest of your car is probably a nice white

Hey man, I know how the whole gravel thing goes. I used to have a bra on my car but the clips that clip in the wheel well aren't holding and they flap in the wind! So I left the hood protector on and took off the other piece to get the clips fixed! So where do you live here in tucson?

87, at stock power levels your car is a little slow, but I have good news. Throw on a cold air intake system, 3.73's, and a dynomax catback. You'll like the results after these mods, especially the gears. You'll go from slow to decently quick and the 3.73's will give you a more grunty low end.

i just got it today! im 18 just so you know, i completly cleaned out the int. with armorall, and cleaned off my rims, i take what i said about my rims back, they are very nice indeed, i have decided to wait till my tires go bald, then i'll replace my rims with some IROC's, i realized that my back tires are just a bit bigger than my front so the car is a bit tilted to the front...i like i like , the tires dont stick out at all, i thought they did at first but now i realize it was in my mind, this car is in such great condition!! i poped in a tape in my car "my car has ERS" the speakers sound fine, they will hold me over till i can upgrade and get a sub woofer, first thing im buying tomorrow is supports for the hood and hatch back because damn are they heavy after holding them up for 5 min. , ythen ill give the engine a good cleaning and wash the car, then ill take some pic for all of you to see

edit: i forgot to mention that i am thinking about not adding the groudn effects on my camaro, its just fine the way it is, pluse its more aero dynamic "no offense"

Hey do you mean broadway and houghton? Well anyways, I know where main street is. I used to play pool there ALOT! Before I hit college and got two jobs! I live on Marigold Cir. It's about at kolb and irvington. Right by one of the entrances to the air force base. You know where that huge beige thing towers at? Can't miss it. I have a polo green 92RS. It's pretty nice when it's clean.(Minus the dent in my drivers side fender) I live on a corner right across the street from a house with 3 camaros, One blue 89 RS an old red berlinetta(I'm guessing 82 or 83), and a 4th gen white V6'er. Too bad the guys seem like ******, we could help each other out if we had problems. OH WELL....

For the hood?
I cheated.
I went to the hardware store and found, on the ground a door sill cover made of aluminum (for afront house door). Fits the height of the hood, full open, perfect.
My back struts still work well. BUT the reason I DO NOT HAVE A WING ON THE BACK, is the extra weight, which would wear out what still works well (gas struts).
Those things are not cheap!

hell no gas supports are not cheap lol...

earlier today went to auto zone and bought the hood supports, they were 30.00 bucks all together ill wait for the hatchback supports because they are 80 bucks for the set and i want to save a little of my check lol, i also bought racing pedals wich give the int. of my car look even better than it alreayd does

clean the living **** out of the engine so it looks so aweosme. now all it needs is a wash and vuala!, i took pics of the engine, int. "with pedals installed " and ext.

im going to develope them tomorrow and ill post them by the end of the night or in the afternoon.
