nothing on the computer side because of the knock sensor, just use 3.4L injectors and a performance chip and RUN HIGHER octan because once you go over 9.5 to 1 it WILL PING at even the lightest acerleration.

I would say yes.. That is a lot to ask of the stock computer. Taking it to tune the computer might improve mileage and ride..

ON MY 1985 ENGINE MANAGEMENT EXAMPLE, I OFFER, my year does not have a knock sensor. My computer worked ok/fine, too.
YET, I've been educated that when ya go to the later years (than my 1985 Firebird) there are differences in many areas.
Start with a bone stock swap (in many areas, it's your call where ya hop up the engine before ya toss it under the hood), to start problem solving upon start up.
After my swap I discovered I had a bad MAS unit. I swapped it out for another, no problems since.
EXCEPT THOSE WIMPY 700R4 trannys!
Damn trannys.
GREAT 3.4 ENGINE!!
Those 3.4s come with a high compression ratio from the start. I believe 9.5 or close to that.

As far as I've seen, no 2.8 MPFI came with a knock sensor... I don't know about the 90-92 3.1's, though.
