Clutch not clutching

I just completed the tranny swap and finally got the thing started. I went to put it into gear and it didn't want to go. I haven't bleed the slave cylinder yet because my friend never opened the system when he took it off. I checked under nieth and have about 3/4 -1 of travel. Did i put the throw out bearing in wrong or do i need to bleed the system or am i on the wrong track

Thanks for the help!

The spec is that the slave piston should extend .57", if it is more then that is OK.

Can you run thru the gears while the engine is not running?

Ya, i can shift through all gears while no running. Once it starts, i can't shift the gears, it'll just grind, like there is no clutch.
