There should be two philips head screws holding the cap down... you can see them from the top. Take em out and the cap should lift right off. The rotor may stick when you go to pull it off. I think I used a vise grip on mine.

Get rid of the haynes manual and get a chiltons total care manual, or a GM shop manual for your car. The haynes is the worst manual available.

Cracks, deposits on the terminals... they'll be white and crusty. Caps and rotors are cheap maintenance, best to just replace them. On the rotor again look for cracks and deposits.

Hehe, that's funny, I thought the Chilton's manual sucked compared to the Haynes!

The old-style carb'd 2.8's used the clips for the distributor caps...

There are more than one version of the Chiltons. The older versions (Camaro: Yellow Iroc on cover; Firebird: unknown)are bad, but still better than haynes but its more of a preference. The newer versions (Camaro: Red RS with Iroc wheels; Firebird: red basemodel with keystones) whip the *** of the haynes day and night. The GM shop manual puts them all to shame but is a little more difficult to follow and takes some getting used to since it isn't written in idiot like the haynes and chiltons.

Try it again when the engine's hot, that might help.
