REAR END LEAK AND NOW HAVE NOISE

REAR END LEAK AND NOW HAVE NOISE

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE THE REAR END GASKET AND REFILL? DO I NEED TO USE A TORQUE WRENCH TO TIGHTEN EVERYTHING BACK UP? NEDD HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANKS

Car: 1986 Firebird
Engine: 2.8 V6
Transmission: 700R4
A torque wrench would be good; torque is 18 ft/lbs IIRC. You put a pan under the rear cover, remove the lower bolts (and loosen the rest) so the axle drains, then remove all the bolts. Remove all old gasket material & clean both sealing surfaces. Then, either use a new gasket (with gasket sealant), or, use a gasket-maker (like Permatex's Ultra-Copper RTV or blue RTV). Clean off the magnet in the diff cover, too. When you're done, fill the diff case with two bottles of 80W90 gear lube (or whichever you want). Add the posi additive if you need to (don't know your car).
