Timming Question

Yesterday I hooked up a timming light to my car to see if it was set right, because the has been running rough and I thought it need to be timed. With that said, I took a look at my timming and mark and i noticed that mark was fluxuation up and irraticly between 6° and 8°. I can only supose what the number is do to the fact that i could not read the numbers on the gauge because it was dirty. My question is why was the mark going up and down? My father said that my spark plug wires were shorting out or something. Is this true? I do need to change them.

Thanks,
Robert

P.S. What degree of advance should set my car on?

10* for automatic while in gear. Replace the wires, it really wouldn;t hurt; unless there less than a year old... then I'm not sure what your problem is

As far as I know, there's no EST wire on the 82-84 carb'd 2.8's. Are you sure "10 advance" is a spec for an 82-84 2.8? I thought that was just for our multiport injected cars...

If your car still has the original hood, the timing will be on the emissions sticker.

I think the stock advance is 6 or 8 degrees, i'll check in the morning.

If it is carbed, I don't think it uses an EST, but it should have a vacuume advance that needs to be disconnected and plugged shut.

If the timing is fluctuating, doesn't that mean it is tme for a new timing chain (assuming that the timing light is correct)?

Just a thought.
