Question about high idle
Question about high idle
I have a 1983 Camaro V6 engine. How do I tell if it is turbo or a regular V6?
Also I recently had a bad gas filter and pump problem that had me break down an hour from my house and an hour from where I was going. I had a mechanic put in a new pump and filter and the car got me home but the engine seemed to be idling higher than normal.
When I drove it to school I noticed that when I would step on the break that I would feel some what of a grinding. Eventually when I would sit at stop signs the car would make a sound almost like something boiling and the car would idle high, if I put the car into first gear and and hold the clutch peddle half way down I can bring down the engine, but to be in neutral and on the break causes the engine to start running high.
I even drove the car home and when I was on the high way, in gear and giving it gas you would never know there was a problem, but to slow down, and worse to stop, would bring on that boiling grinding noise and a high engine rep.
Any ideas on what the heck is going on? Solutions?

Re: Question about high idle
83 didnt have a turbo, easiest way to tell is look under the hood.
Sounds like your grinding may be a brake issue. The high idle could be any number of issues; carb problem, vacuum leak.

Re: Question about high idle
No fbody other than the 3rd gen TTA came with a factory turbo...as for telling whether or not it has one...1 it wouldn't be slow, 2 its hard to miss that much aftermarket stuff under the hood...
As for your idle issue, my money is on vacuum leak. It can cause a noise similar to a tea kettle.
