Installing a tach in a car with coil packs???
No, this isn't third gen, but it IS 60 degree tech
I might be buying my '95 GA SE 3.1 back from my sister, and if I do, I want to install a tach in it. Can aftermarket tachs be compatible with the distributorless ignitions found in the 3100 SFI cars? I would like to put an Auto Meter on the dash right next to the driver window like all the little rice boys do
Can this be done? If not, I'm going to get a new IP, either from a junkyard or new at dealer cost through work. The problem with this is that I need to then roll the odometer to match mine...is it hard to do? I don't want to make it less miles, just correct for the car. I wanna see 200k out of this thing if I get it!

I don't know too much about DIS, but here's a bit I do know-
There's a crank trigger that tells the DIS unit when to fire. It picks up a signal from a specially designed center "counterweight" on the crankshaft. (This is why '82-86 F-body 2.8's are externally balanced, and why '87-'92 2.8/3.1's are internally balanced- there was no center 2.8 counterweight on the 82-86 crankshafts).
So, I'd imagine you can pick up a tach signal from that crank sensor. You'll find the crank sensor screwed into the engine block...

Thanks for the info guys. Now that I think about it, RKSport sells tachs for Cavaliers, but they want like $250 for a huge Auto Meter...
Anyone have any links for tach makers? Anyone know for sure what can be done? Thanks for the info so far.

Wow, those are some high prices- buy from Summit Racing! Summit Racing wants $185 for that same tach in silver, and $150 for the tach in black.
Oh, and those aren't Cavalier-specific tachometers, either! Look further down on RKSport's "tach page"- you need the "tach adapter" sold below the tachs. So I'd say get your tach from somewhere else, and buy their tach adapter.
Or, even better, go to http://www.autometer.com , and e-mail their tech support about what you want to do. They might offer a much simpler (and cheaper) solution!
I think it's funny how RKSport "only" sells a 5" monster tach; I wonder how many other Cavalier drivers think that's the only tach for their car! That's a hell of a marketing idea! But hell, dude, you could buy a $60 Autometer Street tach and wire it up!

Agreed
That's what I was thinking...getting a regular, decent Auto Meter for like $50-60 and then figuring out how to adapt it...
I'll go to Auto Meter's site tonight...can anyone recommend any other brands besides Auto Meter? How's VDO?

VDO is great, so is Stewart Warner.
I've used both.
Work fine.
So do old tachs from swap meets!
