You're absolutly correct.
BUT, try to find a good running CARB V-8 & tranny to swap in your ride.
Get the suspension, too.
You have a better chance for your effort to be rewarded that way!

Honest, then rebuild the original carb & rebuild the distributor.
You do those two things and your car will perform like you never knew it could!
Just a great rebuild.
On the carb, YOU NEED TO REBUSH the PRIMARY shaft.
That will cost ya some extra bucks. IF YA DON'T, you'll have a vacuum leak and it won't idle correct. I rebuilt mine at 211,500. That shaft wobbled like a drunk!
Must compliment that rebuild with the distb internal electronics. That'll make SUCH A DIFFERENCE.
I MISS DC SO MUCH!!
Used to live there from 1977-1980.
I MISS DC! Especially the night time tours around the monuments I used to give.
PS those choke pots (2) go for about $40 a piece & you must find the carb number on the carb to get the correct rebuild kit. Clean the carb (externally) with cleaner to see that number.

Sincerely, NONE!
When ya got the right dialed in stock parts, especially for that vintage, you win!
It's just as timely & expensive to "try" different things, only to find out a good rebuild is just fine.
The carb has NO hop up tricks at all, except a complete & I mean complete proper correct rebuild. Primary shaft bushings & all!
I did that (to my carb) & did it to my Distb on my 1985 S-10 Blazer (w/211,500 miles on it).
If it wasn't for the lousy oil pump, I'd be driving that truck now.
IT starts so easy, compared to the past.
I do strongly suggest a new aftermarket coil. I paid $30-40 for my Accel coils for my applications (Blazer & Firebird). That coil solved lots ignition problems. I get more power (not lots, but smoother) & smoother idle.
Good luck.
The carb rebuild is difficult, due to age of stuff.
Get the right kit, good rebuilder & you're set. They devise a cold air intake set up for more fresh air & you're back in action enjoying the ride.
Reliable, too.
I MISS DC SO MUCH!!
Especially the decorations at the Washington Monument from all 50 states.

In DC huh, duck & cover! if you need a new 'Used" carb, call Andrews Auto salvage in Brandywine. They are really big & also do parts locating. good prices too.
