Would would cause this problem. Help...

And the year of your car is...? Camaro? Firebird? Type of trans? Have you checked for codes?

If it's '85-'89, I'm guessing MAF... or, the IAC passageway could be carbon'd up.

My guess would be that the oxygen sensor on your y pipe is broken or disconected.

Check for codes...

1. Car off, key off
2. Find the ALDL connector underneath a rectangular "cap" below your steering column.
3. Put a paperclip in the rightmost two terminals in the TOP ROW of the connector.
4. Turn the key to "on" (dash lights come on)- DON'T start the engine.
5. You'll hear the fan come on. The Serv Eng Soon light will start to blink code 12 at you... it will "blink", pause, "blink blink"- that's 12. It repeats each code 3 times, them moves on. If, after 3 repeats of 12, you get 12 again, there are no codes.
6. Turn the car off before removing the paperclip.
