v6 or v8?
v6 or v8?
I've been looking at 3rd generation Camaros for a while now and they have grown on me quite a bit. So much so that I want to get my own!
I've recently looked on craigslist and found a few around where I live.
One is a 1990 Camaro RS v6 and the others are various 1988-1991 Camaro v8s.
I mainly want this car as a daily driver. Not really for racing or anything, but I do want it to be quick when I want it to. And I want it to have that sound, you all know what I'm talking about! Anyway, what are your opinions on the matter? Should I get the v6 or the v8?
Thanks ahead of time!!!

Well IMO. You should get the V8. Even if it's just the 305 TBI. Its gonna sound great if you put in some good exhaust and an open air cleaner. There's room for some improovement. Easy to work on. Great mpg. And it'll have enough power as a DD. Welcome to TGO by the way!

Is this like a joke topic?
Seriously now.
Buy a V6 manual car with no options except for t-tops, then go have some fun.

Depends on what you want. The LO3 5.0 Litre (305c.i.) TBI V8 gets better MPG, has more power (which you need in a car this heavy), and sounds good with an exhaust kit. Not that I don't like the V6 cars, or that I dissaproove of them. Just that This is my personal recomendation.

Re: v6 or v8?
Personally I say take your time and get a 350. Especially if you want to be quick. Also they are much better for building on more power later on if you decide to get into that sort of thing.

Re: v6 or v8?
If you get a V6 car for the love of god get a manual transmission. The heavy 700R4 automatic kills those engines.
Like I said earlier, I would take a base model 2.8L/5spd with no options nay day over Grandma's Really-Slow 305 TBI/700R4 with hundreds of pounds of ground effects and BS power options.

Re: v6 or v8?
Do they make headers for the v6?
And I was reading about the stock Camaros during 1990, the difference between the v6 and v8 was only 40 hp. And honestly I think it's worth it for the improved fuel economy, better handling, and better weight distribution.

Re: v6 or v8?
i second the 5 speed suggestions. I've had both a automatic and a 5 speed V6, and the 5 speed car was much more fun to drive
If you find a good deal on a 305 TBI, don't turn it down, when in good shape I hear those can get decent MPG too. I get 23 around the city in my V6, but over 25 in the highway
it sounds to me you're interested at least a little in performance, fromy our header question. if that's the case, skip the V6 and go right to a v8. less frustrations, and in the long run, a LOT less money than a V8 swap

Re: v6 or v8?
Regardless of whether I get a v8 or v6, I'm gonna put headers, an exhaust, air intake, and other little mods on there. Just because I want to learn to do it and do it myself.
But I think I'm gonna get the v6. I don't need that much power, and the better fuel economy would be really good right now! LOL

Re: v6 or v8?
To the best of my knowledge no one makes headers for the 60*6 that will drop in to an f-body chassis.
I ran Hedmans on my S10 with a Camaro 3.1 and got nothing out of them that I wouldn't have gotten from the stock setup.
I am curious why you feel you need them.

Re: v6 or v8?
yes they make headers for the v6. you can find them on summit
dont buy a v6 if you want a v8...it will cost a ton more down the road to put a v8 in than if you just buy one now.
def try to find a 5speed v6 if you want to go that route... and pass on a 305tbi they really are pretty worthless and not much faster despite what everyone says on here(ive owned both)
do a search, read the stuff at the top of v6 board it will answer almost all your questions.

Re: v6 or v8?
the reason I suggested he get a 305 is the car would already come with a transmission he could use for a more powerful engine, and the springs. A car that started life as a v8 makes for an easier swap.
I don't think headers will do as much for him as he thinks they will....might as well throw your money down a hole somewhere...

Re: v6 or v8?
that is true would make the swap a bit easier....might as well get the 350 though if your going to by a v8 and save yourself the trouble. especially since hes a newb

Depends if he wants a 5 speed or not. A tbi with a t5 is a great upgrade platform

Re: v6 or v8?
i believe the 305 tbi cars have the best fuel milage from the factory, and have enough torque to have some fun with. They are also very plentiful.
However, i like my v6 car as well, and with a 5 speed swap it will be a lot of fun

Re: v6 or v8?
v6 is fun, bit of pep. better if it were standard...just saying. If you're looking for more power, and to really get out and shred the road you'll want to bump up. I'm in highschool, and the v6 helps me kick the ricers to the curb, that's about it :P
Bit of fun: V6 with 5-speed
Challenge: V8 with auto/5-speed.
