Higher stall converter 3.1L with cam.
Does anyone know what the stock stall converter is on our cars?? Not too much info that i can find. Im guessing like 1800 Rpms????
The reason I ask is because ive read that you could actually get a S-10/Blazer 2.8L (60*engines)converter and it has a higher stall in it.(2400)?? or so.
I race all the time and since theyll be a larger cam in my car for next years season( anyone that knows my post, i know im dragging a** on the turbo stuff) but anyways the cam will move my RPM range up and now I might actually be able to launch at higher RPMs and not fall flat on my a**.
Any one has done this before please let me know. Im on a supper tight budget on this stuff and if i can get a suitable converter for cheep at a junk yard over a 200-300$ one at summit, it would be awsome!
Or mabey this conversion wont work well?? I dont know.. im too new at this stuff still.

Try one from a 4cyl S10 or S10 blazer with a 700R4, With the increased torque of the V6 it will stall a bit higher. You might get close to 3K out of one.
If you want to go this route you'll have to get the numbers off of the sticker that may or may not be on the converter still.
Use page 7 of this PDF to figure out the K factor: http://transfix.su/files/Miscellaneous.pdf
Then use this formula to figure out where it will stall at. Stall RPM = K * √torque
If your engine makes 200 ft-lbs of TQ, and you have a K factor of 203 then..
√200 = 14.14
203 x 14.14 = 2870 RPM
or just spend about $350 and get a custom one.

do not use the s10 converter they are junk and inefficiant, ur car will be faster with the stock converter and the turbo vs the turbo and s10 converter.
tci makes a nice converter and its the one i run in my car but expect to pony up about 450-550 bucks for it

Re: Higher stall converter 3.1L with cam.
Just curious but a torq converter stalls higher as the torq of you car is rasied. So let say i had 180torq from the factory and say it was 190 or 200 now...which id love N/A. Would that little increase of torq raise the stall on the converter?? It would if i somewhat understand them.
So where would you really know where your car (stalls) at from the factory without riping out the tranny to look at a sticker?
My best guess would be to throw it in 2nd gear and at a stand still and floor it and see where the rpms jump to before you take off..???
Or is that just a hillbilly though i have??

Yes, increasing the torque increases the stall speed. That small of a change won't do much though.
From what i found the 4cyl S10 converters were rated around 2400 RPM, while they may not be ideal for hardcore racing, one would work for this intended purpose on a built V6.
If it'll handle the weight of a S10 blazer plus the ability to tow a bit of weight it should handle the what the OP is going to give it. Just be smart and run a good external trans cooler.
