take a peek here, its not unusual to get 25+ with a 3.1. Heck, when I got my car I drove it 1300 miles home and I thought the fuel gauge was busted. There was no way I was averaging 25 mpg, but I was.

Christ man, I get better MPGs out of my car and its turboed. You need read through that link above and tune her up. Your car should pull 25 or so on the highway but a 15-20 in town depending on your habbits. At least thats what mine always did stock and it was in good shape and a automatic.

Re: how do they do it???

You most likely have a brake caliper dragging. A weak fuel pump can affect this as well.

Re: how do they do it???

There's a ton of things, O2 sensor, fueling issues, spark/timing issues, or some mechanical faults. We as listeners can not pinpoint the problem by just hearing that bad MPG's are the effect

Start with a tune up and assure that the engine is is in good running shape.

Re: how do they do it???

Usually caliper drag can be fixed by replacing the pins on the offending caliper and applying a generous amount of grease to ensure it doesn't hang up again. It's possible that the rubber seal on the piston is weakened and not pulling the pad back as far as it should, also, but far less likely in my experience.

Also, if that's the issue, you'll want to replace your brake pads at this time, and ensure that ALL your caliper pins are properly greased.
