No Tensioner Pully

I have a 1985 2.8L v6 camaro and there is no tensioner pulley on the car. If you look at it from the front on the top left you have the Alternator and then in the middle there is the water pump and below that is the crankshaft. On the right side at the top is the AC compressor and below that is the power steering. There is no belt tensioner pulley. There are three belts one going from the AC to the water pump to the crankshaft. There is another belt going from the crankshaft to the water pump to the AC compressor to the power steering. The last belt goes from the power steering to the AC compressor to the water pump. As far as I can tell I have to loosen the all of the accessories and pull them back to put on the belts. My question is this how it should the belts be tightened and should I have a serpentine belt instead of three small belts?

Re: No Tensioner Pully

That year of 2.8 uses V-belts, and requires the accessories they drive to be pivoted to replace the belts. I don't recall what year the F-body received serpentine belts, but in the S-series, that uses the same engine, it was 1988.

V-belt systems do not (usually) use a tensioner pulley. I have not seen a tensioner pulley used on a V-belt equipped GM 2.8L

Thanks that was helpful. I thought all cars had serpentine belts. Now I know what parts to look for and how to remove and put new v-belts on. Guess you learn something new everyday.

Re: No Tensioner Pully

Are you sure that a 1985 V6 Camaro didnt come with a serpintine belt?? I wasnt aware of that but im still learning. I though that Fbodys had them before 1988 or was that on V6's that the serp belts started in 1988? What I mean, was is this true on all f-bodys?

I'm 100% sure that a 1985 2.8L F-body would not be serpentine, just not sure if it was 1987 or 1988 when the switch happened in the F-body.

Re: No Tensioner Pully

My 87 LB9 is a V-belt set up. I know on the v8 cars the SERP belt came in 88. I think the v6 cars where the same.
