Re: engine harness removal

Basically? Unhook EVERYTHING to start with. Don't forget the transmission and O2S under the car. Undo ALL clips retaining harness to body. All you have to do is pull out on the clip where the top joins the bottom, you don't need to pull the clip out of its hole.
1. Undo nut on passenger's side junction block after disconnecting battery. Remove wires from under/over alternator battery post wire and positive battery wire.
2. Remove bolts/nuts from ground points on rear of cylinder heads. Unplug HVAC system harness by heater core hoses. There will probably be a separate GRAY connector with a RED wire in it (HVAC blower HI feed), unplug that as well.
3. Unplug BOTH ENDS of the injector harness, which can be left in place. Just unhook the 4-terminal connectors. Or the 6-pin on the later cars. And don't forget the cold start injector on the 2.8.
4. Unplug ALL relays. Unplug wiper motor (wiper wiring is in engine harness in older cars, in front end light harness for newer). Remove both inline fuses from passenger's side frame rail covers.
5. Remove nuts from starter posts for battery post and ignition switch post. Remove red, orange, and purple wires from starter posts. Put nuts back on posts so they don't get lost.
6. Unwrap harness running to front injector harness connector, coolant temp gauge sender, A/C compressor, and oil pressure unit(s) around under engine and back out by starter.
7. Unplug power steering pressure switch by battery and run wire back through conduit to rest of harness.
8. Using a 1/4" socket on a swivel and long extension, unbolt C100 by brake booster. Separate front light harness from engine harness by releasing tabs and pulling smaller connector out (away from wire loom) away from bracket and set aside.
9. Remove lower panels from dash on passenger's side and kick panel. Unplug the ECM, C221 (6-wire gray terminal except 90-92 cars), C207 (15-terminal black connector), and remove clip retaining harness to body by pushing upwards (towards windshield) before pushing pass-through out of body and feeding harness out hole.
10. Remove inner fender plastic from passenger's side and raise front end if necessary to fit arm into open space.
11. Pull remaining part of harness out of hole by passenger's side of cowl.

This will probably take you a while, being your first time. I managed to get this down to about 10-15 minutes. DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING. If you feel resistance, find out what is hanging before going to town yanking on the harness (I broke an O2S this way because I forgot to unplug it... Was going to get a new one anyways).

Re: engine harness removal

Dear Lord! I have some burnt wires behind the engine. Do I need to do all that to get to those wires! But I am saving those instructions regardless. Thanks.

Re: engine harness removal

Leaving burnt wires behind isn't safe.. Did the car suffer from a fire or just an electrical short or lay on the exhaust, etc? Are you buying a new harness from GM or going aftermarket?
If you don't have any electrical knowledge, you might want to ask if anyone lives close to you. I have wired several cars from Headlight to Taillights using OEM harnesses ad Aftermarket. I have pulled my hair out many times trying to solve electrical issues.. But overall, they worked great.
