is there a trick to this???

OK on my 92 rs 3.1 I can change all the plugs EXCEPT the passenger front. I've tried special plug sockets numerous extensions and elbows...other that witchcraft or removing the alternator bracket and ac stuff...how the hell you get it out?

Re: is there a trick to this???

A swivel 5/8" plug socket and extension should do the trick. I've used a swivel extension and a regular 5/8" plug socket with no issues. Although, the swivel extension is a trick piece that years ago a friend gave me. Never saw one like it before or since.

The square end that goes into the socket is tapered (on the flats, along the length). Allowing the socket to pivot side-to-side on it. I have been able to grind an extension to do the same thing.

RBob.

Re: is there a trick to this???

If I remember correctly I had a spark plug socket at the time that had a hex end where the rachet drive goes in. I would put the socket by its self onto the plug and turn the socket with a wrench.

I changed the plugs a few times on my '85 V6 and remember it being simple and roomy.
I know I changed the plugs on my stepdads '91 V6 at least once and don't remember any issues.

But that was some time before 2001.

Re: is there a trick to this???

I figured out a little trick. I was able to remove the plug with and extension but found it hard to hold it at the right angle when installing it. I took a piece of vacume line and stuck it on the top of the plug. Made it easy to "fish" in there and start the plug at any angle.

Re: is there a trick to this???

I had trouble with mine as well i had swivels and so on trying to get after it. i just took the alt. bracket off and fabricated up a different bracket and now i can reach my hand down and pull the plug out if it falls out the socket and have plenty of room.

Re: is there a trick to this???

I got it out.
just used a non spark plug sochet, a swivel, and an extension.
still backfires a little during deceleration .
Im thinking the broken exhaust studs are causing an exhaust leak leading to the problem.
all ignition parts have been replaced, seafoamed it about a month ago.
so...I'm chasing the gremelin causing this.

Best thing is to weld a nut to the top of the broken stud. (start the weld in the middle so it hits the stud and then work out to the nut). Anything else is a waste of time.

yes, if you have an exhaust leak and you only hear the noise on deceleration than that is your problem
