E2SE Tuning

I just replaced my E2SE with a remanned unit from National Carburetors.

They are supposed to be bolt-on and go. However, it was not quite so easy.

The car starts, it runs, but it's barely driveable. I'm pretty sure it's a mixture problem. There's a "dead spot" right at the beginning of the throttle, if I don't feather the pedal, the car will stall every time I try to accelerate. Once I get it moving, I either have to barely touch the pedal, or go WOT to keep it moving, if the pedal is anywhere in the middle, it will make the whole car shudder and it sputters and jerks.

Does anyone have a guide on how to properly set up the E2SE from scratch? The mixture screw is exposed from National (the cap is removed), but it looks like it needs a special tool, I'd prefer not to try using needle nose pliers. I've searched the net, but there's not a lot of good info out there about this carburetor.

Also, how important is the idle stop solenoid, and what is its effect on the system if removed?
