At last, engine time. Fuel injection questions.

I'm on the home stretch, mechanically. I've repaired or upgraded the suspension, chassis, rear end, brakes, and transmission of my '87 Camaro Sport Coupe, and it's finally time for the engine to be replaced.


I've chosen a 3.4 long block to replace the 2.8, for the obvious and keep-it-simple-stupid reason, and a Comp Cams K-Kit, with a 252 series cam and 1.52:1 rocker arms at a Comp Tech's suggestion. The 800-4800 rpm powerband suits my needs and driving style, and according to my old Desktop Dyno program should put out about 183 peak horsepower and 224 pounds of torque with short-tube headers.


Several online fuel injector calculators suggest that I will need fuel injectors that flow right around 19 lbs/hr to support this level of power.


My first question is: will MSD ignition, power pulleys, and a custom tune (along with other minor changes like k&n airfilters and Hawk's Ram Air scoops) have enough of an impact on the peak/overall horsepower to significantly change what flowrate I will need?


My second question is: what fuel injectors (brand/source/company) do you recommend for my application, and would an adjustable fuel pressure regulator be suggested as well?

And with that outta the way , for injectors there is only one place I'd go , and that would be "SouthBay" . They are a sponsor of this board and a quick search will turn up many threads where he can be seen helping people here .

If you do decide to do a bit of ECM tuning , and don't want to experience the learning curve on that firsthand , the site sponsor known as "Tunedperformance" is the guy to go to . Same idea as Southbay , helpful and very reasonable , pricewise .

No, those other parts you ask about will not significantly change the required fuel. Some won't change it all, like the pulleys. Using underdrive pulleys does not increase power, it only reduces the amount of power that is taken from the engine to drive those belt driven accessories. MSD ignition also does not add power, but helps with a stronger spark to burn the fuel already there.

I don't have any vendor recommendations, since I've only ever bought used injectors, but for 19 lb/hr injectors you could grab some from 5.0L Fords, and I believe the 4.6 also used 19 lbs/hr injectors. 305 TPI used an injector right around that size as well.

South bay would be a great vendor for injectors. I run 48lbs ones from them. There support is great along with their product.

Six is right, the pulleys won't add hp just drag the engine less. The ignition parts won't add hp like many think. It just helps the spark stay strong and more consistant.

As for a tune there are a few ppl that can help. if it's a 1990-1992 I can burn them. John wane can as well as tuned preformance. I will say I'm one of those ppl who are NOT in agreement for mail order chips. I believe that a datalog is needed for a proper tune. If you are willing to learn you will be able to tune the car yourself. In order to do it, the basic parts and such will set you back about 200 bucks to tune it yourself. But then you can tune it right and as many times as you want.

19 lb/hr injectors could also be had from a 3400 IIRC. Pre-00 3400s would have the same injector plug as the stock injectors.
