Changed pick up coil and now theres an oil leak?

A couple weeks ago I changed the pick up coil inside the dizzy. Scraped off the old gasket for the distributor and put a new one on. Now I'm getting oil leaked on the driveway. Started as a small amount but just today there was quite a bit. Did I put something back on the wrong way?

You did not replace the O ring ?

The distributor will have to come out once again , replace the O ring , and the oil will stay where it belongs .....

Did not know I had to replace the O ring. Will do that tomorrow morning. Had been looking up common causes and was hoping that I didnt have to do a big seal or anything.

Thank you!!

Yea , you replace that O ring and I'll bet your oil leak goes away . It really is amazing how much oil can come out of one of our engines when the O ring is bad , and it's because the distributor is mounted right in the pressure oil passage . The O ring dries out , gets flat on it's edges , and when disturbed like during pick up coil replacement it doesn't seal back up properly .

Just know that , with a proper new O ring in place on the distributor , that the distributor is an absolute BITCH to push back down into the block . Do NOT hammer or pound on the distributor to re seat it , you will damage it !

I found that if you coat the new O ring with some clean oil , get above it and push down with both hands while twisting the distributor side to side (in the same direction as you would when adjusting the timing , for example) it should pop in (with considerable effort) . It ain't easy , there are threads here about what a PIA it is , but , it IS doable with patience (and no big hammers) ....

Best of luck , and report back with the results of your efforts .

Replaced the o ring today, wasnt that hard to put the distributor back into place! I've parked it for the day with some cardboard underneath to make sure the leak is gone.

Thanks for your help!

So its still leaking, and I managed to see from where. I circled the general area of (not sure what that is, the transmission and the oil pan i guess), and the smaller circle is of a drop of oil sitting there.

oil down there is often the rear main seal leaking, very common. Probably just missed it before.

That and valve covers I call the GM anti Corrosion Package...

Clutch isnt slipping. I guess I might have to take it to my mechanic as I think the rear main seal is a little too much for me.

owned many a GM n 1 furd with that leak and it never effected the clutch. As it just drips and runs down, would have to be a big chunk missing to make it spray or shoot out. The drips are seen most often after running it. The warm oil can easly slip out drop by drop. IVe gone 165k to 250k with the same slow drip.

[ that pinto I had was bad though, I got used 5gal jugs of motor oil as it didn't stay in long, after a time, you could follow the trail out of the drive way and to the places I went most often. I only paid $185 for it, sold it for $400, bougth a 68 Galaxy with that money, traded the Galaxy for a 9sec 2 stroke Kaw triple drag bike, yea furd pinto ]
