found my oil leak (yeah another one)

ok, i just come to the sick realization that oil is leaking pretty heavily from my oil pressure gauge sending unit right next to the oil filter

1. how much do new sending units go for?
2. what kinda tool do i need to take it off and put a new one on.........the nut is rather big, and a socket will not fit over the unit..........theres not much room for a wrench neither.........

the price on the sending unit will depend on whether you have gauges or lights.

AZ has a rental tool for oil sending units, a BIG deepwell socket, for like $10-15, use it, return it, get money back.

I got my sending unit at Kragen....it was under $30. I forget the actual price. I think I used an adjustable wrench. No, there's not a lot of space to move a wrench so you'll have to turn it slowly and patiently.

Actually now that i think about it, I changed a sending unit on a Suburban and I used a socket.......so, Snap-On DOES make a socket for this job but it's not required.

hah, Snap-On, gotta love them, i just got a whole set of them for school (at my parents expense )

now anyways, i'm gonna make another attempt to reach it from on top after i drain the oil out..........

if that doesnt work, i will have to wait for my dad to get home cuz he is like 1/2 my size and can fit underneath a camaro when its jacked.............

will i need a gasket for the job?

Teflon tape!!!!!
Actually, there are two nuts on the units.
One large at end, one small at fitting itself.
You "Can" get it from top or bottom.
IT's easiest when ya change the filter!!!!
i.e. MORE ROOM!!!!
Wanna cheat?
Go to oil changing place, have them swap the old one out while doing job. Takes five more minutes!
Unless, you're like me, adding the sending unit for the first time, compared to swapping the electric idiot light unit for the guage unit.

anyways, i have bigger problems..............when i drove the car out of the garage after diagnosing this problem, MY POWER BRAKES DO NOT WORK

AND MY IDLE SURGES FROM 1000-4000 RPMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am thinking that this is a vacuum problem.............

either that or i bent a brake line...........but i dont think I did, becuz all i did was wiggly one slightly to get a wrench onto the sending unit

but why the surging RPM????

thanx in advance guys

Good to know. If my car starts surging Iwill know where to look. When I first read the no power brakes and surging from 1000-4000 i was wondering what in the heck could the problem be.

Good job figuring it out. Have fun with the oil sending unit, I was once told swearing at it intimidates and makes working on cars easier...

Why do you guys make a simple repair into such a big problem? Seriously, the sending units for guages are ~$15, they aren't tight at all, I seem to remember I used a standard combination wrench to turn it a 1/4 turn to break it loose then turned it by hand till it was out, I covered the hole with my thumb and screwed the new one in, I lost maybe 2-5 drops of oil. The new sending unit was already prepped with a thread sealer. It was a 10 minute job including jacking up the car and finding a wrench the right size.

if there is one good thing I can say about the 2.8 and 3.1 cars its that they're easy to work on.

My point isn't to make anybody feel stupid, cause everyone needs to start somewhere. But at the same time there is no reason to make a project harder than it has to be. Its good that you got it done and it works now, but its bad that this thread makes changing this sensor sound like a nightmare to everyone that reads it when its really a straight forward job.

The MPFI V6 is easier to work on than virtually any other engine offered int he Fbody. At least you can get at the bolts to tear the car down.

What about those Superb Access FOUR CYLINDERS!
I found one in the wrecking yard.
And a previous neighbor had one, too.
My Vega engine looked bigger!
