Swapping in a 3400 sfi

3400 swap questions
Hi I have a 2001 grand am 3.4L. I have changed the front timing cover and Water pump and pulleys to 95 Camaro. Now that I have flipped the intake 180 degrees. Which way should the fuel rails go?it seems that they must face the same way as the thermostat housing (inlet and outlet front of block). But will the connectors have to be changed around so each injector is firing when it is supposed to? I am keeping the obd2 computer and tuning it with hp tuners.

Also I tried bolting up my th350 with the speedway adapter but using the grand am flex plate there is a huge gap between the converter and flex plate. So this morning I ordered a flex plate from a 88-95 v6 Camaro ( p/n ATP Z 212). Now I am reading that I should have ordered an s10 2.2l flex plate because of the starter. Did i order the wrong one?

Looking at a member on here (mars061) he shows what looks to be the Camaro flex plate so I ordered it

Any help is greatly appreciated

Re: Swapping in a 3400 sfi

I did a similar swap on my '93 c1500 (3100 sfi obd II Turbo) I had to extend one of the injector connectors when I plugged the harness in correctly, but I also have the harness bulk connector at the back of the engine. You will need the Camaro 2.8/3.1/3.4 flex plate due to the bolt pattern on the converter. The bolt holes in the flex plate will need to be elongated toward the ring gear to work (for the converter)

You will also need to make a 9/16" shim for the starter along with longer starter bolts.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot. So the flexplate I ordered is the right one I guess? And the injector connectors were changed back to their original position after the rails are flipped so injector on cylinder one becomes cylinder 6 when flipped therefore you need to change the connectors around right so connector 1 is on cylinder 1( or the new injector 1)?

Also what if I use injectors from a 3500 motor without the return. I don't have a return line on my car so

I am only running an alternator on the front and need to figure out how to mount the alternator and tensioner and maybe one of the idler pulleys any ideas on the best way to do this. I don't have the Camaro brackets.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: Swapping in a 3400 sfi

The cylinder numbers don't change just because you flipped the intake around. The numbers on the LIM are just for OE install reference. So when you turn the intake around the numbers no longer match which cylinder they are pointed at. You need to keep the injector harness connected to the cylinder it was originally connected to. You can do yourself a favour and grind off those numbers so they don't confuse you. I ground them off, simply because they don't match the cylinder numbers.

The returnless fuel system is a very specific system. I don't recall how the OE install controls the fuel pressure, but some returnless systems use a PWM signal to the fuel pump to vary speed, others use a regulator in or near the fuel tank to control pressure up to the rail. IMO there's no advantage going to the returnless system, other than lower parts cost for the OEM.

What car do you have that doesn't have a return line? AFAIK, even the carbed F-bodies have a return line, carbed S-10s did with the same engine.

Here's what I did for my LX9 swap in my Datsun, which will be changing because I'm not going to an LZ9... The LA1 setup could be very similar, or done the same. Note that the alternator mount and tensioner mounts were both custom pieces.
