Need Advice

Hello all,

I currently have the stock 2.8L 173 CUID engine in my 89 RS. I was curious if swapping engines would be cheaper than rebuilding my current one.
I am not looking to swap in a V8 at this time.

How simple would it be to drop in the following engines? Picture provided for clarification.

Any information y'all can give me is greatly appreciated!

List of possible engines I would want to swap in. What do y'all recommend? Is it difficult to do a swap with any of these? What all is needed for a swap?

Re: Need Advice

The V6 forum is probably a better place to get information on this than the Engine Swap forum.

Re: Need Advice

All of those engines are 60 degree V6s and will literally bolt into your car.

Many people will use the original induction, exhaust and accessories when doing a swap like this, to make things easy.

Really? Just bolt into my current bay?

I was eyeing the 3.4L specifically. Any advice as far as this whole process goes?

Since our "base model" cars aren't worth a whole ton of money with their six cylinders and automatic transmissions , there is no real reason to remain tied to the original engine just so the "numbers match" . Rare TTA with matching number original engine = good money . Our sixes no matter what engine = meh money . With that in mind , when your engine does finally wear out , why not grab a low mileage 3.1 and put that in it ? A little more power and a lot less money .

PS , if it's running fine now , and you don't really beat the crap outta it , the engine is likely to last longer than the rest of the car .

When we talked about this in your "how much to rebuild the engine" thread I mentioned the 3.1 and totally forgot about the 3.4 , but like Six Shooter said being the same 60 degree engine family you can bolt them in . If you do a search of this V6 subforum you'll find lots of threads about bolting the bigger V6 engines into our cars . Just make sure you get an engine from a rear wheel drive car , the front wheel drive engine takes some modifications to get bolted in and you may not want to get involved in that .

Re: Need Advice

I (as well as many others) did the 3.4 swap a long time ago. Overall, it is pretty easy to do. There are many old threads on it, including KED85's 3.4L Swap Boogie and Dale's. That is the one to start reading on to answer most questions.
Your current trans will bolt right up, your intake/distributor will bolt on/drop in. It's "basically" a long block swap.

Dale: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/3...ml#post2689811

Those two should get you going.
