Thinking of buying a v6 timing???

Hey guys tried searching but I'm new to this forum. Can timing being off allow a car to start but not move under its own power. Car has 60k miles on it and the guy says all it needs is timing set and it good to go. It's a 1989 2.8l v6 auto trans.

Tell him if that's all it needs then do it and then then we'll talk or price it as it needs engine work.

I get that a lot with old snowmachines I buy and sell,"Just needs carbs cleaned to run great" is sledspeak for needs cranks seals and God knows what else.

What does he mean by "not move under its own power"? Meaning it has a lack of power or actually won't get moving? Does it bog down and stall out, just rev and not move? Need more detail on what happens if you try to drive it.

Probably has multiple problems.

You save no money by acquiring a car that needs thousands of dollars repairs before it is in condition to not repeatedly leave you waiting for a tow.

Now, if you are getting it because you like spending money, and you want a project, and you enjoy jalopy "adventure," that's a whole 'nother way of approaching it.
