1986 V6 Firebird idle and code issues.

Hello I have a 86 Firebird v6. It has been giving me issues for over a month now and still can not seem to figure out what I’m missing. At first it was almost shutting down whenever I press the gas. However I have since fixed that. But now I’m getting codes 22, 32, 33, 34, and 45. I have replaced every part possible. What could it possibly be?

List of every part I’ve replaced:
EGR
injectors
distributor cap
ignition control module
IAC Valve
vacuum hoses
fuel pump
fuel filter
MAF sensor
brake booster
ECM
TPS Sensor
O2 Sensor
Catalytic Converter
PVC Valve

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That's a huge laundry list!

have you reset the computer after replacing these things? the codes wil lstay thr until you clear them.

If I read them correct, 33 / 34 are MAF, 45 is O2 , 32 is EGR vacuum switch??? and 22 is "Low voltage at throttle positon sensor OR Fuel cutoff relay circuit open or shorted to ground"

Im guessing 32 might have caused al those other codes (need to work your way back() and might be that vacuum switch.

try reset the ECM first though and drive it.

where can I locate the vacuum switch? When I first got this car it did have a hose going from the egr solenoid to nothing because it was broke. As far as resetting the ecm I’ll do that now and work from there, also gonna replace the pcv valve just in case

Actually I think the correct term is EGR vacuum solenoid, so that is probably bad regarding code 32....or its not hooked up properly, so you'll need to find out where the disconnected lines go. .

If code 32 comes back after you reset it, I suspect the light will stay off and wil lcome back on with spirited driving on the highway or around town. which is when the EGR activates

ok so here is what I’ve found so far. So I reset the ecm, I started it up. It starts but had to press gas to get it to stay on but then it idles like it should but it’s a low idle. When I press the gas, it lags but then a second later it revs. I let it sit “idling” for about 5 minutes then I drive it up and down my street. When I press the gas there’s no power at all it doesn’t die it just completely hesitates. When it changes into second gear it gains a little more speed and power but when I press the gas, no dice. No power at all. I parked the car and let it sit and it idles low again. When I press the gas there’s still a lag and then it revs. I turned the car off and checked for codes and there were none. I then removed the IAC valve and started the car again, it starts with help of a little gas but then it idles on its own with out help. When I rev the engine, it revs as it should. No lag no hesitation at all. Obviously it throws a code 34 and 22 because of IAC not being plugged in. I turn car off, reset the codes again, plug IAC back in and start the car and the same things start all over again. I let it sit idling for 5 minutes then I take it up and down my street again. Does the same thing. No power from pressing the gas at all. Doesn’t die just moves slowly and when it goes into second gear it powers up a little but then when I try to give it gas, no dice. Same thing. No power. All hesitation. I park the car, check for codes and same thing. No codes. What could possibly be causing this? I also replaced the PVC valve just in case. I’ll add this to the things I’ve changed out.

Im not sure how on the V6 but did you reset the IAC and TPS? Theres a way to set them on other cars but I never read the V6 procedures / specs.

Did you check ignition timing / fuel [pressure?

i had my fuel pump changed..turned out to be defective and wasnt giving enough flow...gave the same symptoms!!!

the tps I’ve set it to spec when I changed it last time. But the IAC, I didn’t know you had to set that to spec too. Everything else though checks out

ok so I just tried to adjust the IAC valve but the car is struggling to much to set it without having to put my foot on the gas to set it. Think it still has to do with the issue I am still trying to figure out.

oh and turns out I’m also having a misfire. So I’ve gotta fix that too 🤦🏻‍♂️

Honestl, the IAC USUALLY sets itself. Butsometimes it needs tht adjustment...Im thinking now that maybe thats unrelated.

Did you check basics like firing order?

Youd be surprised that a simple mistake can mess up your firing order if you put everything back one plug off at the cap lol been there.
