Smog pump help PLEASE
I have a factory 3.1 V6,no mods.I want to bypass the smog/air pump without affecting the performance or longevity of the engine. Is there a way I could use a shoter serpentine belt to bypass this pump in the routing of the engine?

If you go to a junkyard, check out some of the 87-89 2.8 f-bodies. Those that came from the factory without AIR pumps have an idler pulley in it's place. It bolts right to the engine! "It's been a while", but I think the rear support goes to one of the exhaust manifold bolts, and the front two bolts go to the alternator bracket. Bring Liquid Wrench (or PB Blaster) with you to the yard...
In fact, I think you can order that pulley from GM.

I was able to get a smaller belt for my 86, it just happened in 86 only the stick came with one so it was an easy belt change.
And I am in Toledo Ohio, so no smog ****, especially since I live near 3 oil refineries and a coal burning power plant and a nucular power plant few miles down the road.
