After years of Goodyear, Goodrich and Michelin I stepped outta the box and bought Cooper XEONS this time -- very nice tires.
Grip really well wet or dry. Cheap too.

Err... I worked with tires for many years and I wouldn't buy anything made in Japan or Korea especially tires. They wear fast especially when you cant rotate them. Goodyears ride real nice, but they are soft compaired to most other brands and wear fast as well. Michelin is obviously the most expensive and that is because of the amount of nylon belt they apply inside the tires. I'd save your money and get a nice set, tires are one of the most important things you can do to your car. I buy Dunlop and I love Bridgestone products. I actually bought a set of Dunlops that I haven't even touched yet and problebly wont for another year or so

are coopers american made?
because i think that's what i'm going to buy
there's a local dealer over here and they quoted me $120 each tire installed and they have the roadside warranty thing on them too so if i get a flat or whatever they replace the tire for free

Dodge Tech how can you say not to buy a tire made in Japan and then say that you love Bridgestone(Japanese company) products? Also some Goodyears are manufactured in Japan.
Johnyboy my last set of tires were Kumhos(245/50/16) and they were pretty good for the money I didn't like them when it was cold out because they were a little slick. If you do a search you'll find a couple of good posts about the falken tires. Both of these are in your price range. You could also read some buyer reviews on tirerack.com.

The Kumho's were/are on my R/T. which puts out more torque then most stockish tpi's. I beat the crap out of them, lighting the tires up everywhere I can, and still got 40000km's out of them. i could have gotten more, but my balljoints were shot, and my tires wore on the outsides pretty bad, otherwise I'm confident I could have gotten 50000km's out of them. So confident in fact I tracked down the best price for them and oprdered 4 more for the truck, fixed the balljoints, so I'm sure I'll get lots of miles out of them. When they are cold, traction isn't best. But they heat up pretty fast, hook well when really warmed up, and are great in the rain.
I have the Kumho 711's.

No complaints w/ my 711's...245/45/17's
I think your mistaken MileHighBird. Bridgestone owned by Firestone. I think firestone just got bought by sumitomo corp. though. Reguardless of the ownership, tires are made all over. Michelin has tires made here, canada etc. Same with other companies. All the Bridgestone tires I have mounted were made in the US. As far as falken, kumho and the other jap tires, they are all made there. I'll have to take some pictures next time I'm in the shop of all those tires that come through. They really dont last long at all. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to tires. And honestly, I'v compaired the same brand and model tires. one made here and one made in france and you can feel the difference in the rubber with your hands never mind the ride quality. Canada does make a quality product though. A lot of Michelins are manufactured there. If you get the chance to compair tires that aren't mounted, pintch the sidewall between the bead with your fingers and see how much flex you get with a falken or sumitomo compaired to a bridgestone or michelin. You'll be very suprised
And yes, Cooper is an American company

DodgeTech I might have it backwards. I thought that Firestone was owned by Bridgestone but it's getting hard to keep up with who owns who. I do agree with you 100% that you get what you pay for with tires.
Johnyboy the tires mentioned here by Kumho,Falken or even Toyo are all good affordable "street" tires that would work well on your car. Just don't expect would class track performance from them. If you autocross there are better(more exspensive) options and there are some great high end street tires out there from Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. It just comes down to how you're gonna drive and how much you want to spend.

I had Dayton Daytona ZR's on my 89 Firebird. I recently replaced the front two with Yokohama's. When I get the back tires replaced, I will go with Yokohama's.
I like them alot and they aren't wearing near as bad as the Dayton's.
Just my 2 cents.
Hope this helps!

I have Kumho's on my '90 IROC-Z which has no shortage of power (see sig). I've got no complaints at all. Very decent tires for the money and have never failed or surprised me at any point when driving the car hard in two years of use.

I had yoko AVS intermediates, paid 125 a tire at discount tire, and they gripped like crazy, until they broke loose. All at once. As soon as you went too far they just lost it, I think I like tires that break away in a more linear fashion, but like I said, yokos grip like death.
I have a set of Dunlop 8000s on my camaro. They are 255/50/16 all the way around. I'll sell them for 350 if you haven't bought tires yet. They cost me 560. They have NEVER been road on, the car is a project car and hasn't moved (unless i go out and push it)

- I'm guessing you're still on basically stock power. - do the world a favor and don't put Kumho and incredible in the same sentence....
...I'll just pretend I never read that....
- so I suppose my DR's are crap because they have a soft sidewall?
- agreed
for a low buck good all-around tire, the Fulda's win hands down. If you start making good power, Kumho's won't even attempt to hook. Falkens are decent, but if you can get the Fuldas', they hook better for cheaper, and they wear about the same. BFG/ Goodsmears...never had/seen a set hook or last worth a crap.

I actually have some Hankook 245/50/16s on mine I believe
They're kind of hard but overall I only paid something in the area of 750 CDN installed and balanced, so I can't complain.
My buddy has Yoko's on his Iroc Z with a 427, and they take the abuse of his 380Ft lbs of torque pretty good.

-also Raiderfan, tirerack.com is about $30 cheaper for the Gforce sports

the g force is alright. kinda not worth the money depending on the size you buy.
shagwell, they are not crap but side wall determines ride comfort, so doesnt the tred design. softer side walls dont hang cornors as well as a harder tire would. theres always the case that some sidewalls are soft because its cheaply made...hence the non brand name Bjs tires.

I dunno, when it comes to tires, its pretty subjective. Driving style plays a huge factor in how many miles you get out of your tires. Everybody has their own ideas of what's best. If you do autocross or drags with any regularity that will play a role in your decision. If you just want a good all around tire for everyday driving, then you'll probably choose something different. I fell into the last category and bought Goodyear Eagle HR's. At nearly 50,000 miles, they are holding up well. I drive a lot, my camaro is my everyday driver. So comfort and durability were important to me. The eagles have been as good as I could have asked for. And they are relativiely cheap for Goodyears--110.00 each from the Tire Rack for 245/50HR/16's.
I've also discovered over the years that often peoples opinions on tires are as brand loyal as ford vs. chevy vs. imports. So take anyones opinion with a grain of salt and do your own research before making a decision, especially if your minds not made up.

ok so i went with a set of cooper zeon 2xs tires came to be about $500
here are some pics of the new tires and the old ones, i'm pretty sure you can tell the difference
the old tires were kumho ecstas they came with the car when i bought it and were bald so i dunno how they performed and i haven't really driven the car much lately since it's being worked on until this fall
tires are 245/50/16's like usual

And the Kumho's did the best BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS.
I loved the AGX's and the 712's I got about 40K out of the Kumho's, the others were on for a month or two and were replaced cause they sucked.
And no, not anywhere near stock power on that vehicle.
As a matter of fact I will be ordering some 712's this summer when I replace these dunlops that are on the car currently.

Kumho Ecsta AST's
245/50 -16
Got them and put about 1000 miles on them in the same week.
Great in dry, car hooks fairly well and rain was good as well.
Better tread wear and harder sidewall than the 711/712 tires and better tread design.

I have about 8k on the Cooper Xeons sofar. They work great sticky no matter the weather.
Really good traction outta the hole (316 rwhp/700R4) don't spend much time spinning they dig in and GO.
Very happy with this tire. I tried BF Goodrich HR, VR, ZR, Goodyears of all kinds and a bunch of others like everyone else has.
I can't get over the bang for the buck with Xeons.

I went with the Dunlop SP Sport 9000's. A little on the expensive side but I've heard good about them. I was also very limited though because I needed a 285/30/19 and a matching 245/35/19...very hard to find.
FYI...I've found these places offer the best deals on tires. At least for the particular sizes I was looking into.

I have Kumho Ecsta 711s (245/50R16) on the GTA (l98). For everyday driving they are great, stick pretty good and ride well enough. Hooking up well was never their strong suit, as my 60' times will attest, but they have stood up well considering. I have put 20-30 passes on them, a bunch of autoX laps (~20 ish) and several situations where I just had to let some of the smoke out of them and they will probably go past the 30,000 mile mark if I ever get this thing back on the road. They do need to be rotated soon though.
On the neon I have the Ecsta ASXs (195/50R16) on the front (old BFGs on the rear). They hold really well in the dry/wet, better in the snow than the BFGs (though neither should be used in the snow by someone who is uncomfortable in the white stuff) and are much quieter. Not sure how many mile so far, I don't remember what the milage was when they went on, but assuming it was last summer, it would be close to 15,000 by now.
For ~$85 a pop, I ain't complaining. Probably go to the spt or mx when replacing the 711s next summer.
