He doesn't mention any actual reason why the "conicity" doesn't take effect. If you roll a cone/funnel/bottle/whatever, it's going to roll in a circle. Even with a huge toe out I'd imagine these would feather quite a bit being dragged laterally across the pavement. Cool idea though.
