Plasti-Dipped the wheels

I always wondered what my car looked like with black wheels. Since I suck at photoshop I went ahead and bought a few cans of spray on plasti-dip at my local home depot and sprayed the wheels black. I think it looks pretty good and the beauty of it is I can peel the stuff off if I get tired of it. Drove the car for 100 miles at high rates of speed to check adhesiveness and everything looks good. If it's good enough for my tools then why not the wheels?

Re: Plasti-Dipped the wheels

When I saw your sig pic in your dual exhaust thread this morning, I was going
to ask if you got them powder coated.

At least you can peel it if you decide you don't like it!

Can you trim it to the " spokes " and leave the polished dish
exposed??

I painted the spokes first and left the dish unpainted. It didn't look right but I can trim it like you said and peel off the dish if I wanted.

No unfortunately I didn't. There's a guy down the street from me that has a black civic with black wheels and polished lip and it looked ok but after seeing this vette at a car show I decided I wanted to go all black minus the red stripe.

Ya It looks great all black. If my vert was black Id do the same thing. I love the look of your car.

Considered powdercoating mine black and seeing how they look on a white vert.

How easy is the plasti-dip to take off? I want to do the centers of my draglites to see how it looks.

I've never tried to take it off yet but search youtube on removing plastidip from wheels.

Cool. I'll look it up. The color looks nice on your car man. I love it.

EDIT: Looked it up, comes off super easy, just like pulling tape off, no mess or anything. Awesome.

Looks nice, how many coats/cans used? Have you seen what washing them does?

I used 2 cans for all 4 wheels at about 3 coats each rim. I don't drive the car in the rain so whatever loose dirt gets on them I just hose off with the water hose.

I drive mine in the rain so when I do it I'll have to make a thread on how it performs.

Maybe a couple coats of clear will help with easy dirt removal.

You're probably right but I don't know how the clearcoat would react with the plastidip. I find that it withstands a high pressure washer from a distance of a few feet quite well. Still looks like it did when I first painted them.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the wheels

Thanks, just a little update-the plastidip is still hanging on strong even after driving in the rain (Florida downpour) however I did notice that my wheels are a little out of balance now. Just a little heads up on what you may experience if you try this. I'm starting to like this look so much that I may just peel this off and have them powdercoated satin black

If I remember correctly you can just peel it off by hand. Depends on how thick it is, the thicker it is it easier it come off...Prety sure could be wrong though.

I looked this stuff up on the home depot site and it says to use primer. What process did you use to apply the paint?

All I did was clean and dry the wheels then paint.

I'm deff going to have to try that on my IROC-Z rims, I want them to be black but powdercoating isn't worth the cost, since I plan to eventually get aftermarket rims.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the wheels

I have to say, that stuff seems to turn out better than I could've possibly predicted, is it still holding up well pwdbychevy? Always loved the look of your car btw, might actually help me decide on my color scheme too, I am going to paint my car a color called burple, with a single black stripe down the mid covering the raised portion of my hood and continuing the rest of the car at the same thickness as the widest point on the hood, but I have been mulling over whether or not to do chrome or black accents, or both, things like door handles, hood pins, filler cap, rims(probably going to get AR TTMs) and exhaust tips.
I'ts quite likely I'm going to give that plasti-dip stuff a try on my rims, mebe put it on my hood pins and scuff plates too to see how that looks, how many cans did it take you guys @ how many layers? And how much is a can as well? Kind of on a budget atm and have a LOT of things I need to get...

Re: Plasti-Dipped the wheels

It's still holding up nicely. I applied about 3 coats each wheel. It took me about 2 cans to do all 4 wheels.

Re: Plasti-Dipped the wheels

Same here. Didn't even use the entire second can and I did about 3 coats. I haven't had any issues with the paint. I washed the car today and sprayed the wheels lightly. It doesn't seem like my wheels get dirty as easily anymore, either... which is great.

Looks awesome, You really dont need to mask off the tire because the stuff pretty much falls right off of it after it dries.
