Autocross style tires

I really have a strong interest in the autocross style. So I decided that would be my build style. I'm not going all out competitive with it; just want something that I can enjoy for personal driving in the summer. I want to know what kind of tires I should use for the style. I have the 16" aluminum wheels on a 91 Z28. I wanted to get a lower profile tire and wider in the front and rear, but have the rear wider than the front. Please remember I'm going for decent traction on corners not some overly big drag style tire. I have BF Goodrich P235/55 16" S/B radials. Again, I looking for decent traction in corners and wider in the front and little more wider in the rear. If you have any good brands to recommend please share!

Re: Autocross style tires

Are you just planning on running the stock size wheels? I don't think there are many autox tires made in that size. If you step up to a 17" wheel the options increase dramatically.
Bear in mind, a true autox tire will not last long at all. The best of the best is the Hoosier A6 but that is not a street tire.
I drive kumho victoracers on the street although they really aren't a street tire either, the grip is really incredible.

It sounds like you should think about what you really want to do with the car. A true autox tire is for competition, not style. You'll eat them up very very quickly on the street.

The other option is to look at what the ST classes are running which requires a 140+ treadwear rating tire. These will last a good bit longer at the expense of ultimate grip.

You could go 245/50 on those wheels. I think they're close enough. However, if you're just starting don't worry about it. Just get on the track and learn how to drive better. You can upgrade as you go and learn more. If you're a beginner it's unlikely you can take the car to it's limits even in its current trim.

I think I might just buy a second set of wheels (17") and put the autox tires on them for ripping around and cruises; then have the regular tires on the regular wheels for daily use.

That's what I did. 275/40/17 for the track and regular for street use. But you'll probably drop more time by driving better than anything you do to the car.
