91 Camaro Wheel Issue

if there a posting on this already, sorry but I can't find it. Question is I just got a 91 Rs it has 16 Rims as opposed to my 89 with factory 15's. Clearance problem on left front tie rod hitting the rim. Some one told me to put the spacers from the rear on the front.

That worked to get it home which was only a few miles, front what I'm finding is the spacers are required in the rear???? How do I rectify the clearance issue???

Also anybody know if my 15's will fit the 91???

Re: 91 Camaro Wheel Issue

I think you have other issues. Mine came from the factory with 245/50s on 16" rim on all corners. No issues with the tie rods. Only rubs a little on the fender guard insert when under full lockout on turns. No spacers needed.

Are these aftermarket rims?

But yes, 15s should fit, 16s should fit with the proper offset/backspacing.

Different offsets from Front and Back on the factory rims.

I put the spacers that were on the rear to the front and the clearance is fine, but are they required in the back?? Previous owner has no idea?
My 15's off my 89 would clear I'm sure w/o spacers due to the design. Off course my "Haynes" manual is of no use as usual!

I just got the car Wed so I haven't been able to go through it yet, although at a quick glance the alignment looks good and tie rods seem ok??

They are the factory rims!! which are almost vertical in design as opposed to the 15's which are beveled out.

It shouldn't matter as long as proper offsets are used. I would start by taking the rim off and measuring the backspace.

This page explains backspacing and how it's figured. You might find it useful.

Re: 91 Camaro Wheel Issue

Very simple problem guys, the car has a 'rear' wheel on the front, and probably has the correct 'front' wheel on the back. Put the wheels where they belong and problem solved. The rear wheels have a 16mm positive offset and won't fit the front of the car without spacers, the fronts have zero offset and will fit front and rear no problem

If your 15's fit your other car, they will fit this one too

You are correct, finally got around to working on it. There was a rear on the front
