Something like this, this sounded great but wouldn't pass emissions, I could never get the flow the same from one side to the other and if one pipe measured lower then the other they assumed that you were trying to pump air into the exhaust to lower the emissions and you automatically failed.

Of course, this was in 1991, when the car still needed to pass emissions.

For those of you that don't know, the early 3rd gens had a crazy factory exhaust with small dual mufflers, this is the only picture that I could find.

The 2 pieces in the middle are the Y pipe and the intermediate pipe, that connected to the Y at the bottom that split into 2 smaller pipes going up over the axle, and on the other side the 2 smaller pipes went into the center pipe which went into the mufflers on either side and out the tailpipes.

In the future, I cut a 2x4 the length of the space between the fenders, strapped a couple of rachet straps to the front of the cylinder heads and I was able to lift the engine off the eventually to install a new K and suspension.

It was surprisingly not in the way and a single strap could have held it but I liked the security of 2 straps in case one let go

The other one that isn't as bad, in this case clearly wet but not as long as the rest.

One of the ports with less of it, but you can see it looking like a crack in the carbon deposits

Reshaped welded port, circled is the missing bit of valve guide. This is before final finishing with tootsie rolls...

Modified y-pipe I made for this set. It looks kind of rough but that's mostly because the high temp paint is still wet in places giving things all sorts of different textures/colors.

This was probably the 3rd or 4th time this pare of headman ones were blasted and re-coated, 4th car they've been in.

the mount I made, the back lip fits into the stock battery box hold down, the front uses the stock hold down to bolt down so technically I'm using the stock box with the stock mounts with a battery that is much smaller (it would easily fit in the space you have left)

for some reason it's really deceptive, but this battery is a lot smaller than the stock one.
