I dont want to die.....

Ok i didnt know exactly where to post this, so i will put it here. I want to make my car safer, i mean these cars use old safety tech that compared to the new 2003 model cars are a death traps.

Is there such a thing as retractable 5pt harness?

Do these harnesses protect drivers better then stock ones?
(I heard they cause the spine to compress in a crash and will cause serious damage)

Are they ileagal?
(seat belts are very strongly inforced where i'm at)

Fiberglass is it safe for body panels?
(I have read conflicting information on it. One Corvettes are considered very safe because of the fiberglass body shatters and disapates the force (I belive this too, because on Fox's Most Dangerous High Speed Chases I saw a corvette hit the center median head on at 85mph and the chick inside was alright) then again i read that in a side impact steel is better)

Having subframe conectors on your car dangerous? (Energy transfers, so in a impact that would cause the unibody to bend and with subframe connecters the energy has to go somewhere and that usally ends up being the people inside)

(I was involved in a minor accident with a couple of cars this one **** car ended up in a ditch and the person had to go the hospital in a ambulance, this just got me thinking)

not really... in a front or rear collision, we have ALOT of crumple space.. and underthe urathane nose and rear bumper cover are large crash beams... so these cars really arnt too bad in front and rear collisions... for side collisions though, we are much better off then the later 4thgen Fbodys.. and we rate better then alot of the newer tiny cars..... we have nice thick door beams.. the only prob is the doors are so long...

no.
the harness when properly installed and worn will protect the driver MUCH better. people only hurt their collarbones and spines because they bolt the sholder belts too low. somepeople even bolt them to the floor... the shoulder belts MUST bet at or very close to shoulder height. do a search.. someone wrote a nice long paper, err, post, about this

techniclly, they are illegal since they are not DOT approved belts. however, i STILL have yet to hear of anyone get a ticket for such a saftey improvement. and i know of several people running 5points on the street in texas and none have even gotten it mentioned.

while dissaping energy over time is important to shield the occupents from the high forces, the only fiberglass parts made for our cars are race parts. for saftey use only stock thickness metal fenders.. even some of the repo fenders are thinner metal and considerably weaker.

i wouldnt think they would be in most cases... matter of fact, id rather have that bar next to my *** then nothing at all in the case of a side impact.
