anyone done the 455 swap on a third gen
hi guys, i know there is a few people on this board running pontiac blocks in there third gens, i was wondering if anyone might have a pic of there engine, so i can kinda see how things might fit, and how far the motor sits back, im currently having a 455 rebuilt to put in my 86z and i plan on making my own headers, so would like to see how cramp it is with the motor in there, allso if the crank clears, any help ? the swap is alot of effort but the rewards of 500 ft pounds of TQ im sure will be worth it
i'm sure someone has, but i don't know who. first thing i thought of is the trans you have isn't BOP so you need a new trans. then comes the torque arm, how you going to do that? spohn's bolts to the floor pan and not the trans, but cost 400 dollars. might try b&m pn 30299 and see if it'll work with a BOP trans. good luck

I have a Hot Rod magazine from a few months ago, and a guy shoved a buick 455 into a 87 trans am i think. He used a adapter and kept the 700R4. The motor was somewhat mild and it ran in the 11's. It sounded like the swap wasn't that bad. When I find it, I'll try to post it.

The February 2000 Hot Rod has a 92 Firebird with a Pontiac 455 that runs 9.25 at 143.02 (no bull) with a 10 inch tire and no nitrous. It has a TH 400 trans and 12 bolt rear. The guy runs the National Muscle Car Association circut. His name is Neal Owens from Wilmington, Deleware. The article has a good engine compartment photo; looks like it fits pretty good. Indian Adventures is coming out with headers and mounts for this swap.

Hot Rod Magazine June 2000 pg70. It is a 1987 Trans Am with a buick 455. He used a trans-dapt adapter to make the 700R4 bolt up. Still uses stock rearend with 3.23's. It has some expensive parts in the motor, but still uses original iron heads with some work done to them. The install looks very neat. It says at the top of the first page that it runs 11's. Sounds like a kick **s setup.

I bought a used copy of the June 2000 Hot Rod that had the Buick 455 TA article for $7.50 shipped. I'll scan them in and post a link this weekend.

the 2004r is the way to go tranny wise,a well built one will handle the power your talking about, you just have to move the crossmember back about and use the driveshaft for a turbo 350.i had a stock one from a gn behind a 350hp pontiac 400 and it lasted a year with me beating on it all the time. other than notching the frame to clear the oil filter the 455s fit pretty good. good luck,Doc
